R32 GTR Legal Exhaust System (93db)

Currently run a Blitz Nur Spec R with test pipe - awesome.

have a 100cell cat sitting on the shelf.

Looking for a solid legal option

Considered the Varex (remote) muffler (although not really legal).

The 2nd hand OEM systems are old, rusted, bashed, etc...

  • Does any one know of and run a proven system off the shelf, or
  • do I need to have one made up and
  • which shops knows there shiz ?
  • any constructive advice welcomed.

Tired of being concerned when ever I see police on the road.

It's only a matter of time before being defected and I'd rather address this now then get messed around later.

Everything else on my GTR is legal except the Haltech Pro, no engineers cert required.

Also understand I'll need to trade a degree of flow for a legal system so performance will be impacted. (Trying to minimise this).

Hey mate, are you from NSW?

If you are i would highly recommend Hak @ Performance Exhaust Northmead. His number is (02) 9683 5688.

Even if you were just after advice he is a helpful guy.

Normally if you are too loud, exhaust shops would just add in mufflers to quieten it down or add a "silencer" inside the canon. These where the options i was given when i went to an exhaust store.

My 2nd hand 5Zigen 3.5" JASMA approved cat back was pretty quiet, not sure on dB never got it tested. Shame the mid muffler cracked :(

I would say cheapest option would be to get one made up, with two fat mufflers. I don't think the X-Force ones are that quiet. I had the mid muffler replaced with an X-Force 3.5" one, the car is a bit louder than before but still within legal I would say. I never have been hassled by the Police, went through a few RBTs without issue.

Hey mate, the only place I have heard of that do legal exhausts that flow big numbers is Racepace I think it is. I remember R31Nismoid posting about them, I think he had one on his car so maybe PM him, BUT theyr super expensive.

Perhaps go down the route I am. I currently have a 3.5" Kakimoto Full Mega N1 on my r33 and its spastic loud with a gt3582r and no cat.

Ill be adding a 3.5" venom cat, 3.5" varex muffler in the CENTRE and then Im getting a new 3" axle back pipe into a high flow oval muffler for the street. The 3" axleback section should pose no problem, I am only at 330rwkw and people have made much higher on a 3" full system.

The benefit of the centre varex will mean it is a bit harder to detect on a roadside check by a cop, so it will obviously help you get away with those (well atleast thats my plan).

Im going to do the in-car switch modification and get rid of the wireless for the varex too.

Hopefully by the end I should have a quiet exhaust by the flick of a switch and be able to retain any rear section I want, whether its the 3.5" Kakimoto item or the 3" discreet oval section I will be using on the street. Im going to use a 3" Vibrant muffler for the street, free flowing and sound good.

Legal is 90db not 93db. Also do not install a Varex, if you get sent for an inspection it will be an instant fail.

These guys do good mufflers at a good price:

Have a look at the Fujitsubo systems. The one with a large centre and rear muffler is meant to be similar to stock. I went with the smaller centre muffler and large rear which is reasonably soft but doubt it is 100% legal. Their systems are absolutely beautifully made.

Point of the varex is not to make the car legal and as Nytsky said itll fail an inspection, just a way to PERHAPS get cops off your back by making your exhaust quiet. Half the reason im getting one, other half is to make it quiet when I come home at midnight so I dont piss the neighbours off + long highway drives too.

Thanks - looks Cherry.

Seems to meet the legal requirements. In fact a few DB under.

Wondering how much it may, if at all, impact current 330kw

The tech specs are a little difficult to comprehend as I'm not versed in flow

Price appears $1000 Aud.

Did you go through that site or ????

I thought it was that they test it at its most open position ie; loudest. Not illegal for just having it?

here in the ACT they test DB at 3000rpm

although some one mentioned 90DB above - the testers here were looking for over 93DB at 3000rpm

Depends what test you are getting done, if you get EPA'd they test at 3/4 maximum revs and it is a WOT test! Our diesel landcruiser just failed with 103db!

There are no systems off the shelf that will assure you meet the 90db limit! Mine is one of the quietest skylines on the road and i reckon i will still get done if the test is required!

Custom is likely to be the only way.

Not heard of many, if any, EPA testing in Canberra on cars. Normally noise only - unless your blowing heaps of weed of course.

Cops here appear to still stick to "Too Loud/Too Low" on the imports or "Do you know what speed you were doing ya fcking idiot?"

To tell the truth we get it pretty good with the local constabulary - unless your being a TWAT.

They do go out of their way to give a good serve to P's and L's after dark.

Just last weekend whilst I was in a siding 5_0 pulled up. Had a real good chat (wish we had beers). Were nice guys. Shame they're not all humans.

Followed them about 20k's back into city limits from a known windy cruising route a lot of JDM's and bikes use down here on the weekends. (including off duty cops).

Sort of hoping they'd opened up their patrol car and let me chase them down :D

Although as soon as we go interstate, espesh capital cities, a totally different matter. Your cops appear hell bent on doing us - if they see us.

Surprised they don't just set up relocatable booking stations out the front of CRD, JEM, Unigroup, and even Racepace in Vic.

if you want a quiet exhaust you could always take a trip to your local exhaust shop and ask them for some options. they could put some decent oval mufflers into your current system to make it quieter. they would be able to make something quieter than most off the shelf products, and they would still flow well and probably cost less. any exhaust shop that isn't run by a complete idiot should be able to do it

    • I’d love to find some where that can recover the dashes to look brand new and original. Mine has a very slight bubble, nothing compared to some I’ve seen though
    • $170K. I asked one of the guys there as a joke if that price was just for the passenger seat as it was where the price sheet was... he tried really hard to crack a smile 😄 He also mentioned that every single part of the car was inspected and either restored or replaced with a new or as new part, or made from scratch. The interior was incredible, every inch like a new car.
    • Time for a modernisation, throw out the AFM, stock O2s, ECU into the e-waste bin. Rip out the cable throttle, IACV, pedal, etc. into the scrap metal bin. DBW, e-throttle, modern ECU, CANbus wideband, and the thing will drive better than when it left the factory.
    • I agree, don't go trusting those trims. As I said, first step is to put the logger away, and do the basics in diagnosis.   I spend plenty of time with data loggers. I also spend plenty of time teaching "technicians" why they need to stop using their data loggers, and learn real diagnostics.   The amount of data logs I play with would probably blow most people away. I don't just use it to diagnose. I log raw CAN data too, as a nice chunk of my job is reverse engineering what automotive manufacturers are doing.
    • I'm aware, but unless you're actually seeing the voltage the ECU is seeing and you're able to verify the sensors are actually working I find it hard to just trust STFT/LTFT. I will say, logging the ECU comes naturally to me because it's one of the lowest effort methods of diagnosis and I do similar things in my day job all the time. Staring at 20+ charts looking for something that isn't quite right isn't for everyone. NDS1 allows you to log almost everything so that's normally what I do and then sort out the data later.
