So if they don't have hydraulic lifters , then you'd obviously need to adjust them as a maintenance procedure wouldn't you?

The noise could be a number of different things, including anything that has a pulley that the belts wrap around. Like the alternator, etc... It could be the valving as noted above, and it could even be the apex seals tapping on the housing (which is really not good). In theory, it could also be a fuel injector problem.

Tapping on the housing is always a good thing in my opinion

Ticking at idle could possibly be turbo gasket or exhaust mani leak.

Like the dowel trick take a rubber garden hose cut to length and listen while hunting you will def hear a change in sound if it is a leak.
