Hi guys,

I am new to these forums as I have just purchased an imported R33 GTS-T RB25DET 2door.

Car is immaculate and everything is great apart from 5th gear randomly popping out / trying to pop out.

Every other gear is perfect though.

I have been told that the little nylon shifter bush can cause this? is this true? or am I being told rubbish?

I have driven the car for 7 hours (when I drove it back home after purchase) and it drove great apart from the 5th gear issue.

I have tried to see if it is a load related thing, acceleration or deceleration..... but nothing seems to be a common thing causing it to randomly pop out / try to pop out / gearstick wobble when in 5th gear.

It doesn't happen the whole time I am in 5th gear, only after a few minutes each time.

Any ideas?

Change out shifter bush maybe? change out oil to redline shockproof? anything else to try before I get a local gearbox shop to strip it down?

Thanks,

Dan

There is a 2 part rubber bush to stop things getting in the car and noise as well. The lower one gets pretty close to the stick and mine was making my car pop out of gear.

There is another rubber boot that hugs the gearstick and goes over the gearbox.

Just take the 2 other rubber boots off and see if the problem goes away

Otherwise I wouldnt think the nylon bush would cause it to pop out of gear unless it was heavily worn. Might be a problem with the gear detents if it turns out to be a gearbox issue

I haven't had a chance to check out the boot/s around the shifter yet, but I did start the car up today (as it is not registered yet as I am about to move house, etc) and when I jumped in it I could smell gearbox oil.

I assume this is a good indication that the boot/s are fitted incorrectly, or not seated properly, etc.

When I investigate more, I will report back here.

Thank you for all your help guys.

Cheers,

Dan

More then likely the rubber boot that goes around the lower half of your shifter then over the gearbox is cracked. This happens alot. When something is wrong with the other 2 boots you will smell oil in the car.

5th synchro hub sounds worn to me. They usually pop out under deceleration going down a hill, but can do sporadic things as well. A busted selector or something in the selection process can mean 5th not engaging completely too...but usually you experience issues in other gears too.
