Cheers.

Think I'm going with the RaceQuip stuff, it's very good value.

Further to this. On the topic of neck protection, I was just going to grab one of those FIA spec 2" tapered foam donuts that all my mates where in speedway but I'm wondering if something lie a Leatt brace is a better choice (as opposed to full fledged Hans which would require a new helmet for me too).

Have you ever picked up and felt a race suit? Tried 1 on?

A friend and myself decided we were both going to buy a good suit because we were on the serious side of private trackdays and just wanted the extra safety that a suit provides. Our plan was to go to a local retailer, work out what we wanted then order it from overseas for about 25-30% discount (same brand, same sizes as Australian retailers).

I can tell you now that before buying my Sparco safety gear I went in to the Australian Distributor a dozen times before handing over any cash. I spent probably 2 hours trying on different model Sparco suits and I can tell you that just because they were the same size (number) they certainly weren't the same fit. Some were slightly longer in the legs but tighter around the belly, others were longer between under arm and hips, they all fit different between the various models even though they are made in the same factory and the same brand. Even after all that time spent trying on I got the suit home ($1,000) wore it around the house for a few hours over various nights just to get it to adjust and also to get used to the feeling of being in a suit like that and I still took it back and got a higher model that fit slightly better (Sparco X-Light $1,500).

The difference between the $400 "overalls" and a $100 proper suit is massive and then up again to the $1,500 suit was quite astonishing. The weight differences are amazing and the additional fire protection is also considerable.

Edit: The same can be said for helmets.

Buy the $150 job from a motorbike shop and you will get only $150 worth. The more expensive they get the lighter they are, the better ventilation they have and much better face screens on them.

It really comes down to, how much can you spend and the more you spend the safer and more comfortable everything will be.

I've been speaking with RaceQuip and going over specific measurements.

To ensure its comfy I'll be getting it a tough larger so it should have plenty of space (also to accommodate any growt from gym).

As for safety I was originally just getting a single layer but will eat a multi layer SFI 3.2/5

Cheers for the feedback.

We'll see how I go with the HANS stuff, I may go for it, in the meantime I will try out the donut just for "something" and then I may move to a new helmet and HANS in August if I get a bonus at work.

Went for a multi-layer 3.2/5 suit, shoes and gloves which are a bit better than than the 3.2/1 rated single layer stuff.

$324 delivered for everything, that suit is normally $300, got it for 84, STEAL.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got all my gear, quality looks decent.

Gloves and boots fit well, suit is too big despite me getting myself measured 3 times, they are VERY generous sizings.

L would be been fine but according to my measurements the L would have been really tight and the XL was what I needed, but the XL is for more portly gentleman.

So will have a race suit for sale.

For the lolz. I know they are supposed to be loose but maybe not this loose.

The issue I may have is the inseam and leg feels fine.

I'm more legs than torso.

I may have to buy the large and keep whichever suits best.

Better pics.

For those that wear suits how does this look?

When I sit I wouldn't want it any tighter across the shoulders/lower back but it's puffy ass in the gut/crutch.

I have clipped the belt in that pic to show where I'd add a velcro tab to pull it in.

How loose is too loose...

EDIT: what's the go with the captcha's?

I say in the car and it felt fine, if anything I wouldn't want it tighter around the arse/lower back when you reach forward. Otherwise it Bunches up on the sides/in the gut.

As stupid as it sounds, just don't wanna look like a clown and its pretty floaty if I don't wrap the belt right up.

OK, My mates all seem to think it's fine but interestingly the guy at RaceQuip said I should go for a large and the XL is too big for me.

I'm going to buy the large, should take another 10 days or so to get here, compare it then sell whichever I don't want.
