Oil Leak

I was driving and started smelling burning oil, opened the bonnet and there was oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Took rocker covers off and the gaskets were certainly leaking and I'm in the process of replacing them. Was wondering if this leak could be caused by something else, any ideas? Motor is rb20

Very common issue with RB motors, also replace the half moons at the back of the motor too whilst your at it.

If the rocker cover gaskets don't fix it, could be two other things:

1) there is an oil drain that comes out of the head just above the front of the exhaust manifold, the gasket gets old and brittle because it's close to the manifold

2) cam seals get old and eventually leak, if they weren't done at 100k service (mine weren't, and leaked at 160k, grrrrr).

rocker covers are easy, oil drain gasket is easy, do them and degrease + hose down and see if it fixes it. if not, probably the cam seals. gave my car to a mechanic for that job.

Arent the cam seals the "half moons" which usually come with the rocker cover gaskets? I will be changing them when the gaskets get here. Can you post a picture by any chance of the oil drain you were referring to? I came accross a bolt that seems to go in just under the cam on the exhaust manifold side. It was loose and sticking out so I tightened it a bit. Is that the one you are referring to? If so, what is the function of that bolt?

no the cams seals are cam seals and the half moon seals are just that - and they dont usually come with the rocker cover gaskets

highly unlikely the cam seals will leak onto your exhaust as they are at the very front of the engine behind the timing belt

Just an update on this. I replaced the rocker cover gaskets and half moons as per this tutorial: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/292400-rocker-cover-gasket-replacement/?hl=+rocker%20+cover%20+gasket%20+replacement which came in very handy. Took the car for a long drive and there were no leaks and no smoke (from oil leaking onto exhaust manni). Hopefully it will keep going alright.

I do think that the cam seals are also leaky so that might be the next DIY (it just doesnt stop)
