Metal Selection And Tips For Fab, Harness Bar

I want to make a harness bar for my 4 point harnesses on my drivers and passenger full bucket seats.

Im think of bolting points to the rear upper seat belt and the lower front seat belt points. Eventually ill get a welded in cage, but for now just for track days i thought i could make up a harness bar myself.

What metal pipe would i use for the bar and links to the mounting points?

I have a mig gas welder and can cut scallop ends on the pipe if needed.

The harnesses im using are the long style so it will be set back from back of seats and the rear seat will be removed.

I know some fabricators will say dont do it, harness bars arnt good, but im not worried about rollovers at this stage just want to be held in place at the shoulders at this stage.

i was looking at a harness bar and the only place they seem common is in the states, yes they will give you a place to strap your harness to but what happens if you are in a decent crash, you would rather not know, spoken to a few fabricators and even a sparco rep all of them were against the idea big time, read the cage thread in the motorsport section some good info there.

They dont protect your head in a rollover....

I still want one though, ive blown my budget on car this year so no cage just yet, but i want to be held in my seat for track days.

Just need some tips on fabbing one myself...

Neither does a seatbelt, would rather a harness holding me in, in a roll over rather than a lapsash

But the harness will hold you up where a seatbelt alows you to move somewhat...

Im all for a harness bar over a seatbelt, but this is reason why most cage fab people are against making one for me...

Honestly, if you'r asking what material to use- you might wan't to re-think welding a safety device together yourself?

I can weld ok, I just wasnt sure what is normally used for this type of thing...

Ive had my wedling pressure tested and examined for inclusions etc, Im not self taught.

I may be able to get a meridian made harness bar secondhand (hardly used), so may not need to make it myself afterall...

You can buy them, but they arent liked because of the way they can pivot in a crash.

I just put eye bolts where the seatbelts bolt into under the seat, im too tall to use the parcel shelf.

4 point harness and sparco seat for trackdays, its a total bitch getting in and out of the car, you wouldnt want it every day.

And look at the CAMS regulations, theres everything you need to know.

At the end of the day it's your ass (litterally) on the line... so i hope you are confident in your abilities. That being said, give these guys a call http://racetechsteel.com.au/about they supply many top level fabricators with material. They will also be able to pint you in the right direction for filler material and gas depending on what you buy.

The harness bar in my track/drift pig is as simple as backing plates and a bar that runs infront of where the back seat would normally be. If you want a removable bar, I would use this as a good example to work from http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=320522
