I've got an RB25det in my R32 gtst

everything from the flywheel back is standard R32 GTST stuff.

I was wondering if I can use the R33 GTST diff to get the taller 4.1:1 ratio.

Can I just swap out the whole diff?

or do you need to swap out the internals?

does it require a change to tailshaft or drive shafts?

what is the easiest way to do this?

Housings are different - front mounts have bushes in R33, no bushes in R32. Rear cover is different. Tailshaft and driveshaft connections are same (normal Nissan 5 bolt).

ABS sensors can vary a lot. Either there, or not there.

I took the CW&P from an R34 diff, put it onto an S15 centre into R32 housing with S14 driveshafts (to match the 3x2 bolt S15 output shafts). These things are fairly interchangeable in the R200 stuff.

Oh, that's not to say that you can't do it semi-easy. The weak wristed way to do it would be to get the R33 housing, change the rear cover to the R32 type and fit it to the R32 using bushes in the front mount points. But the nice thing about the R32s is there are no bushes there, so.....take that as you will.

But you certainly won't swap it in without at least changing the rear cover.

The rest of my post was showing that you can mix'n'match to achieve pretty much any goal.

After I put a RB25DET from a Stagea into my R32 GTS4, I found I needed different gearing. I simply had the CW & P from a Stagea rear diff transferred onto the centre of the GTS4 rear diff (not what I actually meant to ask for, but a better result all round).

(transferred the whole front diff assembly to keep matched ratios)

I done pretty much the same conversion but using an s14 diff. You need to use your old 4 bolt back cover and use r33 /s14 front mount bolts or buy longer bolts for the front mounts as the non bush types are an inch shorter. Other than that it's pretty simple just got to know if you need to get an abs one or not as GTSboy said

with the abs vs non abs situation, you should be able to swap over the component flange (pinion flange) between the diffs to suit your car.

as in, abs car installing a non abs diff, swap in your abs flange with the abs ring (with care taken to marking and torquing the flange and nut back to where it was previously to keep the same pinion preload) ?

you would need to fabricate a bracket for the abs sensor, and make some sort of dust cover for the pinion oil seal, but it sounds like it would work.

in fact I was hoping to do this myself in the coming weeks. can anybody confirm this?

    • More photos are up, and the price has been dropped to $16,000. It's just had a service and a new 12V battery, too.
    • I agree on doing some better than factory pistons, rods, and oil pump. For anyone using the vehicle on the road, I don't get why everyone wants big cams. The stock cam profile, with some more lift would be mint for road usage. Everyone going big cams and then wondering why it isn't as responsive in traffic, when they've shifted the torque curve upwards an additional 1000RPM. Make torque, at lower RPM. Sure it's not as cool as claiming "500KW" and revving it to 8,0000RPM, but that same torque 2,000RPM earlier... Then you don't need the extremely high end pistons and rods, and blah blah blah.
    • Personal experience. Those f**kers burn. And are actually a PITA to put out. Next time I walk down the back, I'll snap a photo of what the inside of the bonnet looks like when that thing ignites. PS, powder fire extinguishers are useless on that stuff too as it's fibrous and when it ignites, it starts to pull apart. And you end up just blowing powder through a sieve effectively.   Like the big thing is, if it's fire resistant, it's job is to stop what burning? The METAL above it? It's just to try keep heat off the bonnet paint work.

    • That's more or less what he meant. What it really means is that you do not have to go full crazy on the build. Don't need the best oil pump, expensive rods & pistons, big cams, etc. You can upgrade whatever you want instead of using stock level items, but you don't have to. Having said that - any time an RB is opened up, if anything is getting replaced, I think the opportunity should be taken to do all the sensible upgrades. Pistons, rods, pump, etc.
