ouch good point, im going to get the gasket in the morning and i will post the noise it makes on the way, does anyone happen to know what size the eye bolt copper washers used on the turbo for the oil and water, i want to change them while im near the turbo tomorrow cos i didnt put new ones on when i replaces the exhaust manifold a couple of months ago, damn it i should have measured them when i had them in my hand last time or got new ones then

old cars (heaps old) had no water pump. The water does move through the block and radiator by thermo siphon. It also doesn't heat up as quick as you think, think about drag cars with no radiators.

Yes through convection as I said. Remember that these old cars were designed to run like this. Cars with water pumps are designed to have a working water pump therefore there is much less convection happening

Wasnt saying it would overheat in 2 seconds but I wouldnt risk driving it for very long. Combustion temps are pretty damn high

it would be good if i could hook up just the water pump and not the alternator, at least i would know if it was the alternator or not, but even if i found a hose that would fit there would be no way to put it in and tension it to work lol maybe a pantyhose hahaha i heard that they work but i highly doubt it

it didnt record well and was louder in the car but you can hear it when i accelerate. The fan/alternator belt is the only belt on the car and it is new, i think it seems to be louder when im turning and start accelerating which is why i removed the power steering belt first but the noise was still there

Thats interesting. The speed of the sound does not seem to change with the speed of the engine. Ive also had a few leaky gaskets and none of which ever sounded like that. If you take all the belts off and take it once up the road and back then switch it off you should be fine. Or if you want to be safe you can try find a small belt to run the water pump but thats not gonna happen since you cant tension the belt from the pump. The fact that it does not happen in free rev though tells me its probably not the belt. A squeaky belt which I have had squeaks at idle and in gear. From the sounds I heard I am sure its not speeding up with the engine. Can you confirm this? Gaskets are hit and miss. Where the turbo sits there are potentially 4 gaskers it could be. Mani to gead. Turbo to mani turbo to exhaust or exhaust elbow to rest of the exhaust. Usually a gasket leak will produce the noise when there is only load on the engine but often if the gasket is far gone free revving the car and you can possibly hear the gasket vibrating. Look for obvious visual signs like carbon buildup any where around the exhaust side of things. Then check the intake. To me though it sounds more like a scraping sound. At first I thought maybe your recirculation valve was going haywire.

thankyou for your reply guys, it seems to get louder with speed but the sound is consistant, i feel like it only happens when there is boost pressure. I have a turbosmart dual stage boost controller that i might try bypass to give it a test when i change the manifold to turbo gasket that is bad

damn it i thought i could remove the manifold to turbo nuts and move the turbo enough to get the new gasket on without removing it totaly, doesnt look like it. Anyways i removed the 4 nuts and i was surprized that they wernt really tight and i know that i tightened them up really tight when i put it back on last time so im guessing they vibrated loose a bit, they are normal non lock nuts and it uses like a metal plate that you are supposed to bend the tags on it to press up against the side of the nuts to keep them tight but i think its not a very good design at all, has anyone replaced this with using 4 lock nuts exactly like the manifold nuts cos they are they fit perfectly.

I actually found a post by someone saying they had a screaching noise coming from there turbo cos of this exact gasket being bad, it sounds similar to my noise and i can actually see a bit of my gasket missing and i remember a crack being in the gasket when i put it back on but i thought it would be ok haha stupid me, i would have got a new one at tge time but the car was in bits and i had no one that could drive me to get a new one.

ok i just removed the turbo off the manifold and as i could see the gasket blown, it came off in 2 peices it was that badly blown out lol

ok so while its off i might as well examine it, does anyone know how much movement should be in it from side to side and in and out for example, and is there anything that is safe to clean and service myself while its off. Yeah since my noise only seems to happen when the turbo is boosting and having such a badly blown out gasket im assuming this is what was causing the noise, i guess i will find out when i put it back on.

You mean turbo end float and shaft play? Not sure on specs as I dont have my laptop on me

As for any repairs, not really if you dont have the right tools or experience, they are sensitive things. If it aint broke dont fix it etc

Yeah dont open your turbo. As for shaft play minimal. My old highflow had about if not less than 1mm side to side. Cant recall up and down. You can just cleab out the oil which might be in the front of the turbo induction wheel as it has a tendency to collect there. Just grab new gaskets and slip it back on.

i just want to let everyone know that the noise is now gone after replacing the manifold to turbo gasket, it was such a strange noise for a blown gasket but i hope this will help others if they ever get that noise, i want to thank everyone for there help in helping me diagnose and fix the problem
