Andrew, we've got a massive problem in Vic with police cracking down on import and modified car owners because of hoon driving... We're mildly annoyed (to say the least) because your actions were just fuelling the fire.

No choice for you mate, years ago when i too was a f*kwit i was caught doing 160 in an 80 zone, I was by myself and in the middle of nowhere and nothing could save me, having a full year off from driving cost me my job and many hardships with the missus and a family....... I have not had a speeding fine since.

You do the crime you pay the fine, unfortunatley for you your fine is a loss of graduation and job prospects. You had passenges and at that speed you will not get your licence back for ANY reason unless you have a few hundred thousand dollars in your back pocket to pay for extremley good lawyers.

Prepare for the fun of not having the ability to drive anywhere, and afer a year of it you will think twice before risking other peoples lives.

Andrew, there is no way in hell you will get your speed reduced enough at court to change the 12 month suspension. If you take matter to court you SHOULD get charged with conduct endangering life and speed dangerous. If convicted on those you WILL have a criminal conviction also so I think the choice is obvious. Just take the fine and suspension, you got off very easy.

I would have definitely charged you for all offences and impounded your car, IMO this is very slack by the police member.

Speeding penalties are MANDATORY. The only way out of it is to hire a lawyer who can get you out of it, 100%.

To do this you will need to plead not guilty to the speeding offence and then present the data proving your innocence. If you cannot do this, you're boned. If you try and fail, expect a worse punishment than what has already been metered out.

You cannot plead guilty and ask for a more lenient punishment, it is 100% impossible. Mandatory means the court has no alternative.

To play devil's advocate, I wonder why there isn't a law based on the severity of the crime. Surely if you are alone, in a deserted area, endangering only yourself, in the dry, in a car where this speed is 'safe', doing 180kmh is less of a serious offence than doing it in the CBD with a full load of toddlers directly at the Flinders Street Station road crossing.

It really shouldn't be as severe a crime.

Charles, you would be able to travel but you would have to declare that you have a prior criminal conviction. Also will show up on police checks for employment, good luck explaining that to potential employer.

Location of offence does matter. Get caught at 150 in middle of nowhere in dry weather, probably not speed dangerous or conduct endangering, but do 100 in 50 zone in rain almost hitting kids at school crossing same speed offence but will have much higher penalty at court.

180kmh in wet conditions with a full car is beyond retarded / insane. You do not deserve a licence seriously.

Do not even bother trying to appeal that. And I bet you would get more than 12 months if you try too. A guy I worked with was caught doing a similar speed in DRY conditions ALONE and managed to lose his licence for two years and has to start from his Red P plates again (nsw).
