Hi everyone hopefully I'm posting in the correct section but I'm looking for some advise & help if at all possible.

Basically I have owned a 96 series 2 R33 GTST for almost 3 years now & since owing the car I've been chasing an issue of misfire/hesitation upon coming onto boost.

A quick brief on the story so far after first getting the car & never owing a turbo car before I decided to take a mechanic for a service/tune & to hopefully sort the hesitation. Unfortunately once I got the car back the mechanic said that due to my mods (basic stage one) that I was on the max with what he could do with the ecu which has resulted in boost now set to below standard & still with the issue just less of it.

Being the male I am & on limited funding I then decided to educated myself on the car & to see if the issue might be something else… I then found this website SAU Australia & since then I've been using the search function quite a bit trying to get to the bottom of this issue.

I've replaced so many parts now trying to fix the fault but all I seemed to do with every part change is either nothing or make the problem a little worse.

I've now bitten the bullet & placed an order for a Power FC which I'm currently waiting to arrive, I've not long moved back to NSW (Sydney) & I'm still trying to find a tuner to help me. I've contacted a couple of places via email but this seems to be a waste of time as no one replies guessing the good ones are always busy or just think I'm wasting their time.

What I'm looking to know is can anybody possibly recommend a tuner around south western syd? Also would you advise waiting on installing the new ecu until I can hopefully find someone to check over the car first?

Thanks in advance

Perhaps list the parts youve changed and methods you have used to resolve the issue with a list of mods the car has...

There are quite a few good tuners in syd, jem is the first i think of, going to a specialist will cost though as your paying for their experience and knowledge over just a general mechanic...

mods currently running fmic, exhaust, pod, spitfire coil pack. I've also replaced the plugs, cleaned air flow meter, replaced all filters, new coil pack loom & the last part was the O2 sensor which seems to have increased the issue.

Alright lets begin. I can suggest a couple of tuners for you to consider. CRD, Toshi, JEM, JC Racing, DVS JEZ.

My main concern for you is that you will be paying for a tune which will potentially not fix the problem you are having. Actually unless there is a problem with your ECU, a power FC will not fix it. Basic stuff, did you gap the spark plugs down? Have you pressure tested the intake? Have you tried running off wastegate pressure(remove connect the wastegate on the turbo directly to a nipple, don't go through anything)? Have you made sure the spark plugs are nice and tight?

Now someone above suggested fuel pump. A fuel pump issue will definitely cause issues when coming onto boost, you simply will not be able to climb through the revs, it just hits a wall and lean pops its ass off. My fuel pump failed on me right after I got it tuned(it was also a pretty new 040). Symptoms were excessive lean popping, hard to start and could not ramp the revs up and make power. Straight away without question, I got another fuel pump and fitted it in and the problem subsided, except I now had a tune which was very rich but thats another story.

On a car as lightly modded as yours it shouldn't be hard to find the cause of the problem. It should just work. Did you put the spitfires in or did they come with the car? Did you put them in to try fix the miss? Are you absolutely sure they work? Do you know how to tell the difference between a miss and lean pop? Try this, free rev your car in neutral, hold it at say 4krpm. Is it a smooth purr or is the engine dropping revs and popping? If it sounds fine, raise the RPM up to 5k and hold. If it sounds smooth I MIGHT say your fuel pump is alright, my car would not hold a smooth idle. Skylines I have found are very fussy. If my car is not running 13.8 afr on idle, it lean pops.

If I could hear the car in the flesh I could tell you if its a miss or if its leaning. If you can come to the conclusion it is leaning, don't drive it and get your self a new fuel pump. Then again I'd consider a new fuel pump anyway. These cars are old and a fuel pump failure could potentially cost you an engine if it goes at the wrong time.

A faulty CAS could cause a miss. Damaged coil pack loom could cause a miss. Could be something very small but like I said try confirm its a miss and not a lean.

I wouldn't suggest installing the ECU. You don't want to get onto boost with a base map PFC but at the same time, if you have the hand controller, it could provide some diagnostics such as AFR voltages(you could check for drops and sags which may indicate an issue with the AFM), you could check the injector duty cycle. What I'd try to do is find someone with a stock R33 gtst ecu and try it out in your car, eliminate the ECU as a potential cause.

Thanks for the replies the issue is more intermittent but is increasing more frequently since I replaced the O2 sensor. The car idle seems fine & will rev without any issues when in neutral & also when you just seem to ease on the power however there are times which is now more often that as soon as you need the power to say overtake the problem comes in.

I'm not sure how to explain it I'm certainly no mechanic :) but it's holding back in the low end of the rev range from 2500rpm through to about 3500-4000rpm, after that the power seems to come on fine. I haven't replaced the fuel pump as yet guess this is something else to look into cheers, however fuel consumption I thinks alright around 380-400km.. starts fine in the morning however I don't drive it every day but when I do it starts without any hassles so I don't know…I've basically got to the point where I know I'm going to need to spend some $$$ if I want to get to the bottom of the problem, which is kinda why I've gone the new ecu just wasn't sure if I should wait & get it to someone first before installing it.

Would rather try & not create anymore problems & thought I would see if anyone else may have had similar issues & might be able to point me in the right direction of who to talk too.

Buy and fit a new fuel pump. If yours hasn't failed it could at any time. Work your way through Sarge RX8's list above. No point tuning it if there are things to be fixed first. What plugs did you put in and what gap?
