hey all,

I'm looking at changing out my HID bulbs (currently 8000K) to something more white (4300K), but i'm not exactly sure which bulb i have. I had a look at the ballast, and it has no indication. It only says 55W and 12V, but no idea what the bulb type is, whether it's H1 or D2R.

Also took the bulb out and had a look, but nothing.

Tried googling what both H1 and D2R bulbs look like, and they look the same to me lol.

Anyway to know how?

i'm not looking at converting, it's already a 55w one. Just wanting to know which bulb lol.

Though I'm considering 35W. What's the major difference between the 2? I know when i turn my headlights on, the radio has crazy interference lol. Is it noticeably less with the 35W?

Well if it's an r33 or 34 you wont be burning your headlights. The plastic can burn and the reflective shit can discolour. They are also far too bright especially for oncoming vehicles.

Regardless of what is in your car your car uses a h1 bulb. All ballasts have a standard wire setup. You buy the wattage to suit the ballast and thr bulb go suit the car. H1. Im not positive on thr kelvin rating though. Not sure if its controlled by the ballast or bulb.

How the hell does a H1 look like a D2R?

H1:

D2R:

Did you buy a cheap $50 one off ebay? Good luck on them lasting more than 3 months. I had 100% of the ballasts die on me (two $50 sets one $150 "Hyluxtek"). Pretty sure the Hyluxtek one was fake. They are also inconsistent (different bulb colours).

Also, if you have halogen headlights (not factory Xenon), which, if you bought a H1 kit, is safe to assume you do, no sympathy for you getting defected for the lights.

when i search H1 and D2R, both of those photos showed up, so i wasn't sure. In saying that, the bulbs i have atm look like the D2R ones, except the base itself doesn't look like that.

I assume I have factory xenon headlights, going off the fact it says "xenon" inside the headlight.

No need fto be so negative, I'm asking a question. Even if it seems like a dumb one to you, it still may be valid for others.

Not being negative towards dumb questions, everyone has them and I'm sure people are happy to answer them. I'm targeting general laziness (not saying you're lazy, but if you did some more investigating on your car you would have got your answer quicker than starting a new thread). Not having a stab at you man, but if you pulled the bulb out, you would see the type printed/stamped on there. E.g. on the D2S/R bulbs, they are printed on the black bit (See picture above). On the H1, it would be stamped on the base. Do you have pictures of the bulbs in your car? It's after market so it probably looks a little different. If it is radically different to the D2R picture above, then it's not a D2R bulb.

Assuming your headlights look like this?

Which kit did you purchase?

For those of you who have the factory ballast but have random coloured bulbs, I suggest getting genuine Philips bulbs, e.g.:

Yes they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. You also need a strong ballast to fire them up quickly and run them at proper temperature (such as OEM). I have D2S in my car, and the cheap China ballasts struggled with them (got different colours lol).

Unfortunately and ultimately yes.

It depends on what you want from your headlights. If you're running 8000K lights, your chances of getting done are a lot higher. Then again I passed two Honda Civics last night with blue HID bulbs glaring from their standard reflector headlights. Chances of getting done with 4300K bulbs I assume are lower. But if you have loud exhaust or very low car, or just prick coppers in your area, it's just something you add to the defect list so there's no point running expensive OEM stuff is there?

I don't have issues with a good aftermarket bulb. I have a spare pair which works fine and cost half the price. It's just the quality and the light output is a bit better from the Philips. Fitment is also spot on (the "good" bulbs I have a slightly rotated, doesn't really matter for D2S but might slightly affect the beam on D2R). I had a few of H3 HID bulbs which are rotated as well. Also beware of fake Philips on ebay.

suwidji - Did your car come with the OEM ballasts?

    • Hows your intake piping? Are you still running stock? Having in the stock AFM position would mean, if the BOV was shut/venting out, it'd create the almost stalling kind of effect right // "the rich pulse behaviour" due to MAF thinking air is flowing ? But this would be better than having the bov in the stock position + MAF on/just before cross over piping right?
    • Essentially, yes. Although I wouldn't put the AFM on the crossover pipe. I'd want to put it into what amounts to the correct size tube, which is more easily done in the intercooler pipework. I bought a mount tube for card stile AFM that replaces the stock AFM - although being a cheap AliExpress knockoff, it had not flange and I had to make and weld my own. But it is the same length and diameter as the stock RB AFM, goes on my airbox, etc etc. I don't have a sick enough rig to warrant anything different, and the swap will take 5 minutes (when I finally get around to it and the injectors & the dyno tune).
    • So to summarise, the best thing to do is to move recirc to between turbo and IC, and maf on the crossover pipe. Meaning I'd need a recirc flange, drill a hole in the piping on turbo outlet area. And drill hole on crossover to fit/weld maf sensor? Either that or put the MAF on the turbo inlet right?  Is an aftermarket recirc/blowoff valve recommended? Do currently have family in Japan so could probably bring something back with maybe a cheeky lil SuperAutobacs run?
    • Yep, so far most have said that it looks like corrosion on the wall from piston not moving. Which then has probably damaged the oil rings and caused those vertical marks. The longest the engine was still after the rebuild, was the winter of 2018 - 2019, plus the boat trip to Japan. When I shipped the car, it had normal gas in the tank but before that winter pause, it had E85 in tank.  In any case, even if either one of those was the cause, it happened close to 6 years ago and the car has been driven something like 30 000kms after the fact. Again, apart from the plugs and the dip stick, there is nothing in the way the car runs that would indicate what has been going on in the engine. I am going to consult a shop and ask their opinion, what would be the best approach. I do have some access to a garage I could use to diagnose further myself, but time is very restrictive. Might end up buying another engine that could be used while this one is being remedied. Without pulling the head, it will be impossible to find out if it needs another bore, but here's to hoping a hone would suffice.  Goddamnit, I would really have preferred this not happening.
    • Boot is going to be replaced eventually. I just wire brushed what I could and rust converted. Then painted in rust kill primer. the spoiler also got repainted and plugs replaced on the ends. The under side of the bonnet is going to be black also, currently white. But red on the top side, same colour code as the silo to begin.
