Hello everyone, I thought I would share, I had my cambelt done today at the garage they decided not to replace the water pump as it appears to be okay. So they got it all done and took for a test drive and the water pump snapped where it connects to the fan. Ruined radiator fan and trans cooler.

Wow! That's the first time I've seen that. I would be hesitant to go back there. It's really worth replacing the water pump, idler, Tensioner and cam seals when it is all apart, especially when you are paying someone else to do it.

The waterpump is driven by the fanbelt not the cambelt and before i took it in the fan belt was pretty tight, I think that maybe they didnt install it correctly after inspecting it and it got jammed i dont know how else it could break there.

They are going to replace the broken parts (hope they dont charge me for it) I will see how it turns out when i pick up on monday

Wow that would've sounded horrible when it went. Definately getting a pump change when the timing belt is replaced. :O

I recently did my ancillary belts and even though my fan belt was tight, I had to tighten it again to stop squealing.

Kinda makes you wonder just how tight is overtight.

I had a substantial piece of the water pump snap off underneath the shaft. I was freaked out too.

Timing belt was replaced months ago.

So yeah, I believe it. Looked like the casting had a hairline crack.

But you have to take off all the ancillary belts to do the timing belt ;)

Or possible the shop used a breaker bar and cranked the car to crack the nut but screwed up and cracked the water pump.

Big chance! Even if the water pump was a cheap n nasty casting it didnt "blew to bits"!

Its had a lot of force put on it and its been broken

I would never do that - just put the car in gear and use some of the man power to torque it out - cranking the car is so bloody dangerous i reckon!

I always crack the nut by cranking it over. It only takes a split second to do it, just make sure the brake bar is suitable. My car is an auto so the put it in gear thing won't work.

Why are they cutting corners? Sounds like a shit shop who doesn't care. They also caused this. I changed my water pump when I did my belt not because it needed to but more the might as well factor.

Also I never needed to crank to crack the nut. Big breaker bar to take it off and properly torqued on. I'd also bet they used a rattle gun or just guestimated the torque when putting the nut on the crank.
