Hey guy, i have done an oil change today, but noticed my oil filter has pushed away from the mounting stud, like it has had too much pressure for it to handle.

Its a r32 GTR with a built bottom end and around 400kw at the tyres, it runs a JUN oil pump, I'm not sure of bearing clearances or oil restrictor size as the engine was assembled before i bought the car. Same goes with shimming the Jun pump, i don't know.

What I do know is the engine is a bit over 8 bar at 1800rpm when its dead cold, about 3 bar when warm at idle and will have to check further to see what the max oil pressure is when revving to 8000rpm.

I was using a DRIFT filter, they have a anti drain back valve and a magnet, i figured it would be a good thing, but thinking now it could be not as good as a ryco for strength as its what i have used on all of my previous cars.

I understand the Rb oiling system quite well and know this is quite high pressure, but not unheard of.

I'm just after some info from people in the know with aftermarket pumps running them at the full pressure and if this is something anyone else has experienced.

I'm not keen on the oil filter blowing off and killing the motor that's for sure.........

cheers

Inferior filter could also be the issue. Cant see the brand so cant really say for sure but its also a possibility

Edit: just saw it was a drift filter. Change to ryco, cheap and effective.

Ive always wondered what's the point of a magnet on the filter out drain plug. I understand it's beneficial on a motorbike that shares engine and gear box oil, but in a car engine what is it going to pick up? The only things I can think of are parts of the oil pump or camshaft, both would be catastrophic anyway so it's not like the magnet solves that issue. Just curious, are you running the stock heat exchanger thing?

From memory Trent (status) did some back to back testing and found the Drift brand filter to be one of the best for filtering and trapping particulate... that was a few years ago now and Drift brand is now operating under a differnet parent company, so they may have changed?

I personally use K&N or Greddy oil filters. There is no way you would ever baloon a K&N filter... very soilid.

I'd stay away from ryco wherever possible.

What are your cold start up oil pressures?

Cheers

Justin

Thanks for all the replies, the cold start up is quite high, at idle is 7bar and if i blip the throttle i can get it to touch 9 bar, but if i keep the revs constant, at say 1500 rpm it will settle below 8 bar, this is all dead cold, i just started it in the shed to test.

Where are you guys buying the K&N oil filters, eBay?

Also yes, the car still runs the stock heat exchanger, although im thinking of binning it next time i pull it to bits, have a greddy oil cooler and remote thermostat.

Scottynm35, at what stage do you record 10 bar? rpm, hot or cold etc.??

Autobarn sell K&N oil filters... it's a stock item.

Oil pressure seems a little high, but not abnormal.

I'd leave the stock plate coolant heat exchanger.... tassie mornings are cold and unless you'r doing alot of circut work, I'd leave it.

Why the hate against ryco?

Scottynm35, at what stage do you record 10 bar? rpm, hot or cold etc.??

Stock VQ25det engines run fairly high oil pressure, normally 8 bar on cold start with 10w40 just cruising. With some revs 10 bar is common.

The pressure drops off quickly as the oil temp rises. I would normally run a thinner oil to help lower the pressures but a 0w30 makes the engine sound like a tractor. :/

Why the hate against ryco?

No Ryco hate, I use them for customer cars still, the quality of the K+N oil filters is much better, and the one inch nut on the end is very handy. They are only $5 more than the Ryco if you look around...

130 psi oil pressure on a cold idle sounds very high to me. Depends on the oil pump, pressure relief valve, ambient temperature and oil viscosity though.

From memory Trent (status) did some back to back testing and found the Drift brand filter to be one of the best for filtering and trapping particulate...

Filtration can be at the expense of flow.

Why the hate against ryco?

as stated, why use a cheaply made generic item on an expensive engine? when for a few bucks more you put a well proven, rugged and purpose designed filter on.

Yes very true, clearly filtration will be a trade off for flow.... I should have stated that the drift brand tested well in filtration v's flow comparison testing.

Have you seen a RYCO filter lead to an engine failure due to them being "inferior" to another brand?

for the love of god what is wrong with you people???

Where did I ever say that ryco are bad or do not use ryco or ryco will blow yuor engine up???

What I am supporting is that for an expensive engine, why not give it the better of two options for very little extra cost? especially when the engine has presented a possible issue of deforming an oil filter already...

If there is a better option, why wouldnt you choose it?

    • Starting with issues 1 - 5, we have already run into a problem...!  Issue #4 contained 2x front brake calipers, instead of 1 caliper and 1x steering knuckle. Will have to call DeAgostini on Monday to sort it out. Anyway here's some photos.  Issue #1 is the front bumper, headlights and number plate. Issue #2 is the front wheel (with "We produced with spartan air." text on the centre cap!) and tyre, the front lip spoiler and cylinder head cover with ignition coils under the centre cover... which will never be seen again. Issue #3 is the bonnet and cylinder head. Issue #4 is the front strut, brake disc (with laser etched metal discs) and brake caliper. I stopped here because of the issue with the missing steering knuckle.  Next update will be #5 - #10 in a few weeks.
    • DeAgostini is one of a few companies that release quite large (the largest commonly available size actually) 1/8 scale models in a series of weekly issues over 100 - 110 instalments.  They release different models for different markets and DeAgostini Japan have release the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo last month. I've made two of these 1/8 scale sized cars (one an R35 GT-R from 2012 - 2014, the other I'm just about halfway through, a BNR34 Skyline GT-R from the 2Fast 2Furious movie) so when this R32 was announced there was no way I could ignore it as it's my favourite out of all Nissans.  Each issue costs around $20 so it costs about $2.2K when completed. I suppose it is very expensive for what it is, but the quality and details are really very good, and there are many "gimmicks" like fully functioning exterior and interior lights operated with a remote control, working steering, all doors/bonnet/boot/fuel lid open and close, the side mirrors fold in and it even has a speaker for the engine revving sounds when you turn the lights on.  Each issue comes with a magazine that tells the story of the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo from the first design stages of the BNR32 to Group A homologation and the various racing version that were run in the Japanese Group A and JGTC, and Australian Group A.  So I plan to update the build in this thread 5 issues at a time.  https://deagostini.jp/r32/?srsltid=AfmBOooKjxDc4EUK2rmXqMBPgyHfFJ24s4oEPJBNpnF-lFlsRoW0PE6P
