Darky82
Ok I just done a timing belt kit on my rb25 all I could get was the gates racing one I was told they are noisy but I I'm getting a noise at idle through the timing cover itself if you hold your hand on it you can feel the cover vibrate. I've pulled in on and off a number of times but no matter how I position it I still get this noise. Can I run no cover at all it doing my head in. It's not too tight either just right. 89CAL
Is it the Crank Angle Sensor? I replaced my timing belt then played with the front cover etc for ages to try and get rid of a noise. Wasnt there with the cover off but was with it on. Turned out being the crank angle sensor. Was so bad that it was hard to turn by hand when it was off the car. New CAS and all good just a thought. You can run with no cover, just make sure you check the base timing. Should be done anyway seen as you most likely removed the CAS to do the timing belt Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/432314-timing-cover/#findComment-7036395 Share on other sites
ZRBE
I also did this. But I was just being and idiot f*cking around taking shit off and putting it back on, anyway.. Put the cam cover back on and had a really bad noise (belt rubbing on bolt, I'm pretty sure) Quickly turned car off and tried to fiddle with the bolt (tight, loose etc.) and nothing.. Ended up just removing the bolt, was on top left corner when standing infront of car.. P.S. My CAS has a Mitsubishi sign in the middle. Anyone got an answer for that? 89CAL
They are made by Mitsubishi. The newer ones are made by Hitachi. Remember that Mitsubishi isnt just a car company, and that they do make electronics, air cons etc etc 1 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/432314-timing-cover/#findComment-7036486 Share on other sites
Darky82
Cheers, I had a look at my cas it's seemed ok slight shaft play spins easy the only thing that stuffed my up was the rubber I ring on the shaft it was rooted. So I attacked my garden hose lol who says Bunnings don't stick car parts : ) I pretty sure it's coming from the top to mid left side of the cover some where, I found a slight rub mark in the inside of the cover where the most rounded part is pretty much mid left lol so I gave it few good ones with the rounded part if my shifter made it a bit better. I know some belts generate a bit of walk front and back on the pulley could Have something to do with it also. I might just take mine off or cut the whole front out so I still have a bit of protection and can see off hand any problems that may come up. At least you could just grab it and bend it if it starts to rub dunno, might just leave it off. 89CAL
Its a bit like Denso which is owned by Toyota but you will find quite a few cars with Denso A/C etc systems on them. Admitedly its a bit less ironic then having a Toyota badge on everyones A/C systems but same sort of idea Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/432314-timing-cover/#findComment-7036961 Share on other sites
jjman
yeah this noise is pretty common. Mine did it, would not do it with the cam cover off so ran it like that for quite a while but paranoia for cops as well as dirt made me want to get it back on. I replaced the rubbers as well as I think the rubbers on the bolts and its 80% gone now and only on cold start. then it goes away after a bit... datsun_1600
I almost had a huge problem when I changed my timing belt on my GTR. When I installed the tensioner pulley I accidentally had the tensioner spring sitting behind the mounting flange of the pulley. That would have made some funny sounds I bet (as the pulley would have been misaligned slightly) May have even rubbed on the front cover as the clearances are quite tight. Hard to see without a mirror as it only angles the pulley a little, as it was crimped between the pulley and the front of the block on the bottom side (hard to see). Thank goodness for those triple checks before starting. JeffEdit: A picture is worth a thousand words, here it is ('ve replaced it again since) You can see the very slight indent where the spring got between the pulley and the block. jiffo
Yes Jeff I think this sub section would be a lot less frequented if blokes did as good chippies do, Measure twice, cut once. Darky82
Measure twice cut once he had to check three times, I'm glad we can all educate ourselves on educated answers. Darky82
And what's to say that's where the noise is coming from anyway he didn't even get to try it like that.
