Misfiring RB25DE sounds like WRX

Hey people

I've been having a problem with my R32 RB25DE for a while now thinking it was just spark plugs that need replacing. I replaced them yesterday however it did not solve the problem. What happens is that the car is misfiring virtually all the time and sounds like a WRX (nice sound but car goes like shit). We are sure one of the cylinders is not going. Could this be due to a faulty coil pack?. I've searched for answers on forum already and most lead to faulty coil pack however I would just like it confirmed. Also posted by revhead, I should spray the faulty coil with silicone spray and 9/10 it solves the problem, is this true?

Can anyone confirm this and provide any extra help if possible? Greatly appreciated!

If it is misbehaving at idle, it is a simple procedure to identify the offending coil.

While the engine is idling, simply disconnect each coil plug one at a time. If the note of the engine does not change, then that coil or plug or cylinder is at fault.

Move the coil to another cylinder, and repeat the test. If the same coil shows no difference, then it is the coil at fault. If it is the same cylinder, then it is a spark plug, or worse the cylinder (pooped piston).

If you identify a cylinder as the culprit, you can repeat the test after moving the spark plug to another cylinder.

If you identify the coil as the culprit, it is possible to simply clean the dirt and grime off the rubber boot, maybe give it a spray with silicone, and the problem might go away. Often dirty rubber boots provide an easier path to earth than does a spark plug.

hey guys thanks for the help however I opened them up today and have disconnected and cleaned every single one, as well as sprayed the outer edges and insides with silicone spray. Still same problem. Maybe I need to spray some other part?! I did notice that one coil pack had a split right at the bottom (the outer hole cover). I am awaiting night-time so I can test them all one by one. I did test the one with the split and it seems to fire out sparks near the middle where the rubber meets the plastic housing thing. Then I sprayed it more between the middle plastic and the rubber where the gap is and it went away wht no more large sparks. Do you guys know where I can get them tested proffessionally if necessary?

is there white smoke out of the exhaust?

no I dont think so... If it was, wat could be the problem then?

there is no water spiting out the exhaust either unless idling and reving for a long time so its not the head gasket. Getting a compression test 2moro to check exactly which cylinder/coild could be at fault.

yep I agree... we tested them and found the faulty one.

Replaced it today and car is back to normal! =)
