Working on another forum members car we found a boost leak from inbetween the compressor housing and the cartridge, after searching the net i am thinking it is a old oring that has gone brittle and perished, can we seal it back up with some rtv silicon?

You must be joking... You're willing to play games with RTV for an $8 gasket?

Come on.... Even GCG would have one on shelf if you just asked.

Or ebay it as above.

The 2871R/SR20 variant of this turbo uses the same compressor cover as an OEM T28 from an S14/15. I have not actually disassembled the RB version but I assume it will be the same.

normally you would think there would be a machined groove for an oring? and as you slide the housing over the cartridge it would be a tight fit and seal it? this has no seating surface or space for an oring groove?? nothing in there before it was removed. are these an interference fit?

get correct parts ?

there is meant to be an o-ring, buy the correct o-ring and fix it properly.

boost leak checking with compressed air and water/ soap in a bottle identifies a leak of air from the back of the compressor housing inbetween that surface and the mating surface of the cartridge.

Perhaps the oil seal is leaking into the exhaust? Are you sure it's the compressor housing?

I would say you didn't clean the oil off the compressor housing or rotating assembly when you used the silicone, or it wasn't high heat rated. It should have sealed it up tight.

The OEM compressor housings sometimes have a metal gasket between them, that would be your best bet.

Ill agree with the above, the first time we took our turbos off to inspect them we found RTV silicon was used and we use to run these babies to 1.6 bar all the time with no issues or leaks, we even inspected the silicon bead and it was thin and thorough making a good seal.
