grothie
My rb25 is burning a fair amount of oil. Probably 1 liter per 500 km. I did a compression test and all were 160 give or take a few psi. Wet test came up sell cylinder increased. So rings and valves appear to be good. Turbo is standard and sounds odd. Like a big laggy ball bearing turbo. It blows blue smoke on boost but doesn't if not boosting. Car runs fine and pulls great except is rather laggy. Turbo is shot? Old owner claims it only has 10k on it. StevenCJR31
How does turbo sound "odd"? What sound is it making? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7069910 Share on other sites
Deza3000
Running too rich up top for a long period of time can also start to burn oil due to premature wear. Ben C34
Pull turbo of if you think it's suss. oil before turbo = engine smoky oil in dump = turbo smokey. 89CAL
Have you got a catch can? If so how is it plumbed up? Turbo seals if its only on boost? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7069955 Share on other sites
grothie
No oil comes from oil filler hole. Is a bit of oil before turbo but nothing crazy just a light film. And only blows oil on boost. Can rev it to red line without boosting with no oil use. using standard breather set up Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7070054 Share on other sites
grothie
Also the turbo sounds like it'd a ball bearing. And has a whine hiss noise on vacuum just coasting at low throttle. Can hear the whine once cars shut off too. Has a small amount of play in and out Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7070057 Share on other sites
89CAL
end float is in and out, play is up and down/side to side. Dipstick hasnt been blowing out or anything? It looks a bit like turbo seals. What is the minor leak you talk about that is before the turbo? grothie
dipstick hasnt blown out, and the oil before the turbo is in the pipe with the AFM in it. was only a thin layer, also there was oil after the turbo in the cooler piping, could wipe it with my finger and my finger would be black Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7071616 Share on other sites
StevenCJR31
^^ motor can still be worn without the dipstick blowing out Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7071737 Share on other sites

grothie
how do you test pcv valve? i read up about it and how it works but am not familiar with checking it etc, the engine runs great and has great compression which leaves me to think its a healthy engine Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/433591-rb25-burning-oil/#findComment-7076502 Share on other sites
