Hi all,

I have an R32 GTR and pulled the engine for a rebuild. While the gearbox was out I changed the fluids, Gearbox/Transfer Case and now the car is back together my speedo doesn't work. It worked before the engine rebuild and I originally thought cable so I got another one and tried it and it still didn't work. I know it's broken in the gearbox because I had the car on jack stands and running in first gear without the cable connected to the box and the little shaft that the cable goes into didn't turn. Have I missed something? I thought it would be purely mechanical looking at it so I doubt I've missed a plug or hose or anything.

Just wondering if anyone knows how hard this is to fix? I'm assuming it's a gearbox out job? Why would it have just suddenly broken? The gearbox works fine it drives no problems just no speedo which affects my powersteering. Have I done some damage when I put the tailshaft back in or something? Any ideas/answers would be much appreciated.

Na man it's part of the cast housing right near the back of the trans. Not unless your talking about unbolting it from the inside of the gearbox but you def can't unbolt it from the outside.

Thanks for that. Yeah made sure they were located even had the cable attached to the gearbox and held the other end to see if it was spinning. Also got a drill onto the cable with it attached to the speedo. Got upto 120km ha ha. but its def in the transmission.

Hi Brodie, hopefully these pics will explain- the speedo drive does come out of the transfer case quite easily and without taking the box out of the car. I am assuming this is the part that will be broken The only thing to watch is the transfer case fluid will come out when you take the speedo drive out, so you'll need to catch it as well as top up your transfer case- easies way is through the gearshift hole.

Hey Andrew thanks for the pics but is there any reason why mine doesn't look like that? Are the push type different to the pull type? Or has someone modified my speedo drive or something? Mine looks like this

Hmm so as I'm posting that last post it occurred to me that could it be possible that my speedo drive has been pushed into the box too far ? Hence why mine doesn't look like Andrews?

Yeah I can see clearly now that that's what must have happened. The gearbox was sitting around twice for nearly a year each time so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Any ideas on the best way to get it back out? Where does that drive cog on the end actually connect to inside the box? Will it help if I pull the Attessa line off the back on the transfer case?

Hopefully you've tried the above and been able to pull the speedo drive out already. If not, here's a couple more pics of what you're dealing with. I can't push the speedo drive into my transfer case as far in as yours is without risking damaging it, but if you take off the attessa actuator (don't remove the hydraulic line, and yes- transfer case fluid will come out) you should be able to use a screw driver or similar to lever it out. I've taken some snaps of an empty transfer case with the speedo drive pushed right in so you can see what it will look like inside m(and i was able to lever it out with a screwdriver through the attessa actuator hole). You might need to rotate the inner sleeve of the drive as you go so the teeth line up with the worm gears on the driveshaft as it comes back into contact (yours will have actually been pushed passed the point of contact).

Hey Andrew yeah that all makes sense thanks heaps for doing that. I'll try pulling it out tonight but I'm guessing I'll need to remove the actuator and do like you've suggested so I don't risk doing any further damage to anything in there.

    • There are certain tasks, like replacing head gaskets, where it is very much best to already know what you are doing, and if you are not already an expert, then the next best thing is to have an expert around to help it get done. Little annoying checks and steps that are easy to forget or not interpret the results of properly, etc etc. It is hard to convey that to someone as a lesson prior to taking on a job, because there can be a whole list of "if you see this then it means that", or "if this is what you find then you will need to do these other 4 steps first". All the little bits of knowledge around sealant choice (ie, sealant at all? or no sealant? sealant only in certain parts of the gasket? sealant for this type of gasket but not that type of gasket? etc etc) cleanliness checks and methods, surface straightness and finish checks and methods, etc etc, all combine to mean that people who have done many of the same type of job will struggle less to get a good result than someone who hasn't done it before. I've been around this stuff since forever. But I will still consult with my expert(s) before taking on the big stuff with higher risk profile.
    • Well if I end up having to do the head gasket I will certainly find the necessary tools and instructions before beginning... Let's hope it won't come around.   Definitely. Depends on the job but I think "if you want it done right, do it yourself" applies almost every time
    • Can you at least move to a location without so many ladders, black cats and mirrors precariously propped up ready to be knocked down? Or buy yourself a 1 ton bulker bag of salt to drag around with you. Just, you know, sling it over your shoulder?
    • Meh, what's the worst that can happen? If is is supposed to have a washer, and: the spring retainer seals reasonably well on the surface, maybe just allowing a little bleed of oil out, and the spring does not coil bind when compressed that little extra bit, then the end result will be slightly higher relief pressure setpoint, and no other noticeable effects.
    • Weirdly I see a flat washer on aftermarket pumps but as you said it doesn't seem like new OEM pumps have it. EPC doesn't break out the regulator as a separate component either. I'm guessing if the pump came that way it's safe to use as-is.
