Hey guys,

Wasnt sure where to post this.

I have an R33 GTS-T, but its not with me at the moment and I really need some measurements / help from someone with a 33.

I currently have a 3.5" Kakimoto Cat back on the car. It has no centre muffler.

I am wanting to fit a 3.5" varex muffler to the centre muffler area. (I believe its just before the diff on a r33)

I need to figure out whether it will fit or not.

From what I gather, the maximum height of the entire muffler , including the control box on top is 20cm.

I wont be able to get to the car for over a week and really need some help figuring this out.

If anyone has any idea how big an area is under there that would be a huge help.

Cheers ,

Ben

p.s. mods if this is the wrong forum area could you please move it. I didnt know the best suitable subforum

It won't fit, not unless you are 4wd spec. You could always make a similar setup external to the muffler, using an exhaust cutout switch and 2 inch OEM style muffler in parallel.

You can just stick the Varex on the back, and dump the exhaust tip so no-one can look up the pipe.

Or you could just shove a decent mid muffler and have a quiet system with excellent flow.

Were you able to measure up a 33?

Dont want just quiet, I want the control of being loud or quiet when I want it to be.

If I cannot fit one ide be going rear varex but want to make for 100% sure that this isnt possible first.

Are you sure it wont fit though or are you just going off the top of your head? I looked up some exhaust systems with centre mufflers. The Kakimoto Regu 06&R has a pretty beefy sized one.

The muffler itself is only 15cm in height. The control box being 4.5cm (give or take).

If anyone has quality shots of the underbody of a 33 thatd help too. I cant get to the car for atleast a week and want to be purchasing stuff asap.

No, I didn't measure it up, but I have fitted a few 100mm (4 inch thick) mufflers to 33's and 34's recently. Tucked up as close as I could go it was very low still, 50mm lower again would hit on speed humps and driveways, as it is in between the axles. Like I said, if your car is 4wd spec it will fit, but you will have to be careful not to rip it off.

Hmmmm fair call there.

I just found this thread with an r32 and varex centre muffler.

Would you have any idea whether the underbody area is similar between the two?

Theres some pics in there

Well that 32 has it, so ill remain a bit hopeful with my car.

That being said, anyone else with input please post! Any help would be great.

If my calculations are correct and the inlet/ outlet of the muffler is dead centre, from the top of my exhaust pipe at the moment (3.5" diamater) I would need a furthur 7.7cm above that to clear the muffler body and control box.

I would lose 3.2cm of clearance to the ground as well.

That doesnt sound like a lot does it?

lol...if Scotty cant help you , you're out of luck buddy

i have a 3.5 inch system with a round centre muffler..its smashed in flat from speed humps and still only 60mm off the ground....

so as he said unless you are rocking stock suspension you got no hope of it being legal and most likely it is going to smash speed humps...

good way to destroy an expensive muffler...

And my hope is dieing by the response... I guess I expected this sort of answer.

I may just have to wack it on the rear and remove the cannon in this instance.

My car hasnt got stock suspension. I bought it with bilsteins and blue springs. Someone told me it may be a Sydneykid setup which is supposedly 30mm lower.

im gonna have to agree, by my maths if its right at this time of the night... the muffler(your quote) is 20cm and its a 3 - 3.5 inch system, the muffler is going to be about 5cm higher and lower...

my front pipe used to scrape on certain ramps bumps so i raised it, now my cat is a 5inch it scraps if im not careful....

thats what im gathering from what youve posted

i am happy to be proven wrong though cause it is an interesting idea

I have bilsteins with blue springs too mines a little lower at the front though, i can guarantee its going to scrape, im surprise it isnt already.....just stick it on the rear man...or get an oval mid muffler...

cant you get an oval varex though?

It doesnt scrape at the moment. I go over speed bumps on angles though I am not game to try it going forward incase it does scrape.

I wanted it centre for the stealth of it + I like the authentic kakimoto cannon on it. I used to hate cannons but it grew on me.

But from you guys responses I will probably end up going a rear setup like normal. :(

Im going to be getting a 5" body cat soon for it too. It currently has no cat at all. A venom 5" body (3.5" in/out).

So i was already planning on taking it easy with that.

thats a good point if its about your car being too loud

there are ways to make it quieter.

i have a jjr front/dump into a 5inch venom cat to a 3inch hks super dragger mid muffler removed and its quiet, (quiet by skyline standards)

The thing is im selfish and want to keep the car loud. I want it quiet for 1. Police presence 2. Neighbours 3. Long highway drives.

Other than that, I love the noise!

Another option I have considered is the Apexi ECV, however it isnt as effective as a varex.

It's better than a Varex if you install it as I stated in my first reply...

The apexi ecv isnt a cutout. It is inside the pipe and just blocks exhaust flow.

Your idea with the parallel muffler sounds great and all but if a cop looks under there they would think its sus...

Also, there wouldnt be much room I imagine to fit a big oem muffler if I cannot fit a varex?

I know what it is, and how it would work. I just don't think anyone would go to the trouble for you, other than myself.

You run both a straight 3.5 inch pipe with the Ecv, and bypass the Ecv with another smaller but quiet muffler. When open, both pipes flow exhaust, when closed only the muffler does, (and perhaps the little hole in the Ecv) The muffler can be remotely mounted anywhere.

If the cops look under the car they will see a muffler and pipe.
