Hi all,

Interested in tricks from the experts on how to install / remove wheel nuts without scratching them?

Some people have said use painters tape on the nuts and it will take the wear, others have said cover them with a plastic bag..

Are there any tools that are easily sourced (from Supercheap, Repco - etc) which specialize in this?

Thanks in advance for any advice or info.

Cheers.

stick a piece of rag in your socket, dont use impact wrench...

Yes, rayon/silk is thin enough, and as a footnote...

Sujith the Principal of Hornsby Tyrepower uses rags on his tyre changing equipment too when he sees quality rims.

And to protect the bore of the wheel from being scratched by the socket, you can get some large shrink wrap tube from JayCar and shrink it on; gives a slightly rubberized texture which won't chip or scratch the finish.

I used these gktech ones for over a year with no worries. Made of steel so very difficult to round off.

And it's not that hard to chuck the key in the glovebox is it ;)

Hi all, thanks for the advice.

I ended up taping the inside of the socket / tool so it didn't have direct metal on metal contact with the nuts.

Worked a treat.

Cheers.
