Took the s13 out on the weekend, it's running a 285rwkw rb26dett, and I'm finding that engine oil temp is getting upwards of 120 to 130 degrees when I really start pushing the limits. It does have a reasonable size cooler. And at the moment i have ulx 110 in there. I'm curious to know what everyone else's temps are, It just seems a little too hot. The front bar will be coming off anyway as the next meet Won't be till late January, and I'm looking at running a whole heap of air flutes/ducting anywhere I can fit it.

I saw 140+ in mine after a few laps in summer, that was with a 30 row expensive cooler, running a 14 inch thermo fan. A good synthetic will take it though.

That said, we had to tape up all the coolers on the the Gibson GTR the other day at Sandown as nothing was getting up to temp after 8 laps.

good grade 4 syn will take it, just don't use some magnetec shit and expect it to last :)

I would try to keep it under 130 though, at 140 it starts to really thin out and start to break down

So is GW Synx3000 but it's quite good if you drop it regularly. Full synthetics like the heat more though, and will last longer, but who cares if you drop it every track day...

Only reason I am running Penrite racing 10w40 now is after speaking to the penrite rep, he showed me oil analysis results between the various oils in their range, from actual race meets, and the racing synthetic is perfect for high track temps, the film strength remains for much longer in track conditions. High Zinc levels, SN rated for e85, and It's a reasonably priced oil too.

So does that make the oil better? I would have thought the oil which is hotter is doing a better job of removing heat from the piston crown, which is a good thing.

I agree though, if you are dropping your oil every 300k's it wouldn't really matter what quality oil you run, other than Magnatech? Are you kidding me? It has the worst name ever for sludge creation doesn't it? So many people have warned me away... I would be too scared to try it.

I just buy magnetec for my shitter Accord V6 and drop it every 5000 km as it's $22 LOL

For the fridge I just run Mobil 1 ESP 10W40 and it seems to be good for street & track, don't really have any heating issues as car still makes pretty homo power figures

Pete dumps the oil after every track day, so I don't think the oil has time to break down and sludge. Helps when you have a trailer so you don't have to worry about driving it home :P.

At the last track day, using Penrite Racing 10W-40, I was regularly hitting 130°C lol. Car still drove home fine, dumped the oil after as I didn't want to risk it. Oil was about 3,000 km when I hit the track lol.

When i put the oil cooler on my 32, 1st track day the temps went to 130+ so went home pulled it apart and freed the thermosate and put it all back together and I haven't seen it go past 110 on the track since, 16 row no fan, if I saw 140 with a cooler that big I'd be looking long and hard at it, then tell someone to fix it !

I used to run Nulon 15-50w street/track, I now use Brad Penn 15 or 20-50w, the green oil

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
