Ive noticed all the hype is kms and dodgy dealers and private sales and all this hype about speedos

First of all if you are into performance cars and you buy based on kilometres you should be at toyota buying a new corrolla. Or a barina from holden

Kilomtres are as important as the time settting on the dash. Means nothing.

Yeah its not nice to have a dealer or private seller decieve you but at the end of the day iv seen cleaner healthier engines with 200000km and more .and iv seen sludge on a 40 000km car with bottom end rattles and genuine 40 000kms.

u are right to a certain extent and its the deception that puts ppl off. Frankly, once u rebuild the engine with forged parts... the kms dont matter. But with the genuine kms, it also tells u how worn the car is... other parts would be on their way out... other than that...yeah..to me it doesnt matter that much. :)

OP your argument is absolutely ludicrous!!!

* To suggest that one's daughter be denied safety and truthful dealings when buying a performance car over a Corolla/Barina and be forced to ignore an odometer reading in the process is culpably wrong!!!

* To suggest that odometers are to be set like time clocks in a car is not just unlawful, but immoral. Trip meters are for this; not odometers and you know that!!!

Have your morals degraded to the extent you seem to project? It's not our naivety that's under question here!!! It's fair dealings - free of corruption and deceit!!! Don't you realise that???

If you have children or maybe you will, perhaps you'll get tired of watching out for them lest there be graft and corrupt behaviour lurking in the shadows! Perhaps I can prescribe a dose of "honesty" for you sir!!!

It's True that Higher KM vehicles can be better cared for and may be in better health than lower KM cars.

Falsifying records, tampering with odometers and knowingly misleading buyers is illegal - Period!

As said in above posts KM's are used as an indication of wear and tear of the vehicle and all it's components - USLESS if the odometer has been altered

It can assist in measuring a cars worth - UNLESS the odometer has been altered

Ultimately you should get what you pay hard earned cash for.

No one buys on KM's alone. Although it must be genuine so you get an indication of the state of the vehicle.

Buyers legally expect full disclosure when they step on a car lot, (or buy 2nd hand vehicles from private sellers but this is harder to prosecute).

We can handle truth and make a decision based on it and the dollars in our pocket.

If it means the price of 2nd hand, low KM performance cars is more expensive than higher KM performance cars. Then it is as it should be.

I believe this topic discussion will be like discussing religion. You're right, everyone else is wrong.

Personally, it really maters on the car being purchased. If it's a car torn apart down to shell and rebuilt... wouldn't care if it had 500,000 on the odometer. I'd probably still pay near asking price. If the car is your typical street car with mods, the odometer is everything! Not everyone replaces every small bushing. Bolts are getting stretched and weaker. Fuel cell might be drying out which leads to cracks and leaks. Rubber hoses, brake lines, fuel lines might be corroding and about to fail.

Your point is somewhat valid but I tend to lean towards the odometer means everything. What sucks is when people to cluster swaps with the odometer being lower. This is a big problem here in the US with modified imports. People like to use JDM gauge clusters since they're better looking than the USDM version. I'm guilty of this myself. Did I correct the odometer...nope. Too excited to get it installed to not think about it. So does my Honda CRX have 45,000km's? Nope! More like 190,000 miles! But it's my car, never plan on selling it, and it was torn down and rebuilt from ground up.

I keep hearing about this KM roll back thingy you guys are talking about from shippers making compliant cars and cutting corners. I'm assuming this is why this topic was started.

Of course it matters, it just shouldn't be everything.

Imagine if the 200,000 km car that had been really looked after (serviced every 6 months, wheel alignment etc) had only done 3,000 kms each year instead of 30,000 kms. I know which I'd prefer. Servicing and looking after something properly make a huge difference but things wear out over time and with use.

Now, back to my 19 year old car with 37,000 kms.

People have the right to know how many km's a vehicle has truly done.

However, too many people put on their rose-coloured glasses when they see a car with low kms and think everything will be great. This isn't the case. E.g.

Cars that have sat for long periods of time WILL have problems. There are many perishable items within a vehicle.

The best way to buy a car is based on condition, not odometer reading.

As I saw with Noy on one of his FB updates there was a R33 GTR with huge K's on it wasn't R grade but not far off it and was at a dealer in Parramatta it was sold through action for around $4-5k landed and they are selling it with the magical 60xxx km on the clock for $32,990!!! thats where its a rip and completely ludicrous.

You pay for the condition. If its a genuine low k car but still has issues the sale price gets renegotiated simple. You pay for condition overall not just based on k's.

it's damn useful, if ur motor is rebuilt/all the arms suspensions etc changed then it's fine

if it's dead stock, how do you measure its lifespan....

Everytime I see the posts on this issue I'm tempted :closedeyes: to wind my skyline back from close to 200K km/s to 20Kms so so I could see if there was anyone stupid enough to believe it... Not so that I could sell it to them of course, but just to see if anyone would be that stupid...

The practice of winding back odometers is unacceptable - no exceptions.

There is of couse more to the condition of the car than the number on the dash, but the dash reading is what most people take a first opinion on and in a reasonable majority of cases you'd expect it to be a decent yardstick.

I walked into a certain parramatta road dealership and was shown an R32 GTR with "60,000km" on the clock. The salesman talked it up like it was a great car. My reply was, "I don't believe it because of..." and proceeded to point to several glaring issues with the car that indicated it was a gross misrepresentation of the car's condition. It looked like somebody's track beater, I've seen more subtle dogs' knackers than that car.

I guess they make enough of a living sucking in people who don't know any better.
