Greg
To stop the panel beaters thrashing my car, I was thinking of disconnecting the AFM plug. I read that this forces the ECU into 'limp home mode' so it won't rev above 2000rpm - perfect for moving the car around their workshop but nowhere else. Will disconnecting it cause any damage to my engine? Thanks Greg Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/ Share on other sites
EnricoPalazzo
it wont cause any damage to the car, engine etc, it wont also rev over 2500rpm. Do they need to drive ur car at all? Just rite down the kms on it when u drop it off. If the car has been drive, ask for a huge discount Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/#findComment-889156 Share on other sites
Greg
They will need to move it around in their workshop but shouldn't need to drive it anywhere else. If they do they'll probably think they stuffed something up, then I can play along with it, make them feel really bad, and get a discount (just kidding) Thanks for the reply Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/#findComment-889224 Share on other sites
Abo Bob
Try it at home and let us know. I'm curious. There was someone on here who had his car thrashed by some panel beaters. I don't think he got any recompense and besides, i wouldn't want a discount, i would want my car not thrashed. (not that i don't thrash it myself but that's my prerogative) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/#findComment-889231 Share on other sites
Greg
yeah i know what you mean, if you thrash it at least its yours and you pay for any damage you cause. a stranger thrashing it could cause problems to emerge 6 months later. even if things went wrong while they were driving it it would be impossible to prove that it was not caused by previous stress. i'll try pulling the plug in a few hours....need to study now Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/#findComment-889248 Share on other sites

Greg
can't hurt could be used a theft deterrent as well Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/#findComment-889258 Share on other sites
sewid
I remember a while back some of us talked about this, if you have a PowerFC or other aftermarket ECU you can limit the revs from there to some low amount. Greg
ok i tested it and i confirm that it works, u can't rev past 2500rpm. when it cuts out it sounds quite violent though - is this bad for it? Cubes
I drained the fuel and only put $5 bucks in which let me drive to the crash repairs and then to the servo when I pick it up. And what do you know..... They started the car and it ran out of fuel when I went to pick it up.. It also had another 50 od Km's on the spedo.. BUSTED! I said 'well I put $5 in and now its +50km's so it must have been driven.. Oh no we didn't drive it'. I removed the bleeder and adjusted the wastegate so it made bugger all boost (elongated holes in the wastegate actuator bracket) so they would have been trying to thrash thinking to them selves.. this is gay. Busky2k
I'd disconnect the wastegate so the flap always stays open. Its only held by a circlip I think. Otherwise the AFM idea is pretty cool! The thing is, ok so you find they put an extra 50ks on the car. What can you do? What would u say? What would you demand? I wouldnt know what to say or demand... Abo Bob
I guess that's the whole point of disabling the car. Maybe you could put a cloth in your airbox to block the air. They wouldn't think to look. Cubes
You can't do shiet. I had a VS Commodore years ago that was getting a dodgy 5 speed gearbox repaired (or patched up as I later found out). They had the car for around 2months. Upon picking it up I noticed it had an extra 60km's on the clock and the clutch felt very very spongy upon taking off as if it had been recently slipped like fark. I walked back in side and asked the bloke why an extra 60km's was on the clock and why the clutch felt so spongy.. (I knew the feel of it because it used to feel that way when I would give it heaps) After a short argument with other customers he began trying to threaten me by telling me he was going to drag me across the counter and punch me. At this point they had around 3 customers walk out who were waiting for information on a car. I made an official complaint next thing I know he no longer worked there?!? Not sure if he left or got moved or what.. Revhead
I had to leave my car at a panel shop recently. 1800rpm rev limit on the PFC, take the hand controller with me, make a note of what's on the speedo, and I instantly felt better Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/43558-car-into-panel-beaters-disconnect-afm/#findComment-896393 Share on other sites
