Hi all,

I seem to be having some idle problems with my car, its a 1992 R32 GTR and I cant seem to find out what.

Basically any time im slowing down to a stop, the idle drops to around 600rpm, sounds like its about to die, all the electrics dim quickly, and then it slowly scavanges around to find the right idle (it normally idles at just under 1000rpm so when i slow down it does 600rpm -> 700rpm -> 600rpm -> 800rpm -> 700rpm -> 900rpm -> 800rpm -> 1000rpm). It also occasionally stalls if it cant pull the idle back up.

This only started happening after I didnt drive the car for 3 days straight (it usually gets started every second day at least).

The car has a power fc, and in the sensor checks it reports one of the 02 sensors as being 0.02v (dead) but it has always been like this, and nothing has changed in the period of time before it was running fine, and after it started playing up.

Any ideas/feedback would be appreciated.

It can be an atmo BOV as unwritten law said. My car has idle problems but i know its normal because it is heavily modified. Sometimes the car is already at idle and then the RPM just goes up and down up and down, and the internal lights dim. Hate when it does that but every mechanic ive seen, they say it it becasue of the Modifications. I know this might sound stupid, but try to reset your computer.

Well the car has had atmo bov's (blitz supersonic dd's) since I bought it, and it used to run fine without a problem... just in that weekend something seems to have changed, and its never run properly on decelleration since...

Sounds to me like a vacuum leak - I have the same thing on my NA d/driver. (it has vac leaks, but I don't like working on it!!)

Check all of the emission lines (one might be cracked, or could have been knocked off). If that doesn't locate anything I'll think about it some more and tell you my ideas on Satuday : )

Cheers

Dan

(BTW - no car should 'hunt' at low idle, if a car is very worked it will be lumpy, but not hunt - I grew up with angry V8's

Yeah it runs fine accelerating and top end (it feels a bit choked top end but im putting that down to my exhaust which is being replaced saturday) just as DAN00H said, hunts for idle when i come to a stop. Vacuum according to the AVC-R seems to be ok, and it doesnt jump around alot when off throttle of stopped, but I will check all vacuum lines etc this weekend.

what i've found from experience is several factors:

atmo bov failing - it might have been alright before, but as it gets older, it may be leaking

weak fuel pump and almost empty tank - just before my fuel pump died, it seemed to have trouble sucking enough fuel when the tank is empty (very little downpressure)

    • Throwing my spoon to the soup here a bit.  When I installed a 044 back in 2012, along with the direct power mod, the car became very difficult to start. To a point I burned one starter motor as I was late for work and tried to get the thing going. With some tuning and careful use of gas pedal when cranking it became bearable. Trying to make this short as possible, but the 044 died after 2-3 years, after which I went with an AEM 320lph pump, which also died after about 4 years to my dismay. After that I went with a Nismo pump, and while trying diagnose an emissions problem, I noticed for the first time that my fuel pressure was 5bar/72psi on idle, and that removing the vacuum line did nothing. After monitoring the situation, and removing the direct power feed and going back to FPCM in attempts to remedy it, I noticed there was fuel in the pressure regulator vac line. Kept the FPCM, installed AEM external regu and the car became sooo much better in every way, including starting. And I had driven it like it was for 11 years.. Anyway, I agree these are likely two different problems, and the FP problem you just haven't noticed before. I do not know much about haltecs, but what first came to mind was the CAS, which probably is not there any more. So how is the wiring from haltec to gauge cluster? How is the battery voltage and alternator?
    • Your car was auto before? You have different diff ratio (auto vs manual i think? or n/a and turbo?)
    • +1 for getting a screen off alibaba, CarPlay/Android Auto is vastly better than whatever navigation cars had 10 years ago. I got an Android screen for my 2015 BMW, huge difference. Fully compatible with factory stuff including iDrive controls.
