Hi all

Been a good read so far and as I am in the process if looking for a manifold I thought I would ask a few questions.

Now I know that the 6 boost that Kyle makes are a great unit $1260 and the Brae unit $1100 + also looks the goods but there are other manifolds out there that are cheaper that also look the goods but not much in the way of feedback.

Out of interest sake has any one had experiences with

At performance manifolds

D1 stable manifolds

Sinco custom manifolds

Hybrid performance manifolds

I am actually using a Hybrid Performance Manifold, it has taken the abuse from my GT35 so far...granted its only copeing with 11psi at the momento but flows nice and has not cracked even after a fair amount of track time...yet.

The downside is you cannot put in on the engine as soon as you get it, need to get a straight edge onto it and get it machined. So there you go, they are an average manifold but still work more than fine for daily use and some track hacking. Personally I should have just waited that little longer a bought the 6Boost.

I just made my own, done 22000km on a 25/30 @ 8psi, in a 2100kg patrol on 35" tires, so it does get load/heat put through the manifold.

$78- flange.

$97- worth of bends.

$28- t3 flange.

about 6hrs work in the shed.

$150 to get machined flat.

$20 to get internally sand blasted.

Love your work mate, doesn't look too bad at all and for a good price.

Thank you for the feedback re your manifold, if your doing a lot of 4x4 in soft sand that would give the manifold a real good workout as well as testing your cooling system.

A lot of weight to push around and big tires too.

These are the AT performance manifolds for$900 occasionally cheaper when he has specials

Correct me if im wrong, but does that collector look like its already with a few cracks in it at the pipes merge in the second picture?

Maybe forgot to weld and grind it?

Or am i seeing things in my old age?

Hmm maybe forgot to weld it I'd say, I'm ringing him tomorrow and have asked for some more pictures of his RB manifolds.

Also spoke to rex kelway I think his name was today and his manifolds are competitive to these At ones

Have you come across these Rex kelway units in your travels?

I have not heard of Rex at all.

Ive only dealt with a few 6Boost manifolds, each that ive inspected so far have been flawless, the one we just purchased a few months ago for our GTR was very nicely made, the only thing that i was not 100% happy about was the twin gate pipe angle into the collector, until we wind boost in we wont know how effiecent it is at letting pressure out, i felt a bit of angle on exit, going with the flow may have helped relieve gasses better.

Then again i should not comment about it as im not sure how much engine bay space is avalible to run a split manifold with a true dual port waste gate setup instead of a single one as most others do. (which sort of takes away the idea of being a true split system)

If i see boost spikes, its the first thing ill be pointing the finger at.....so far what ive heard from others this should not be a issue if we run largeish PSI numbers which we intend to do.

I do think your seeing things, your eyes are better than mine that's for sure,

I swear once I turned 40 a couple of years ago my eye sight went with it.

Had to have a double look after you mentioned it.

Be really interested to see how your new manifold goes, I'm sure it will be good, Kyle makes a very good product.

Rex Kelway is a fella from SA, he has a fair few postings on the Nissan s14 site I think it is

I will have a hunt around for some pics of his manifolds on Friday, they also look quiet good quality for a similar price as the AT Performance manifolds and 6 boost but there are no reviews that I can find, just happy customers.

Would be really interested to see a comparison between a heap of manifolds that have been tested on the same engine with dyno results

Etc.

Its very hard to judge a manifold by looking at pretty pictures from the outside.

You need to be able to look at detail, externally and more so internally, length of pipes, bends, diameters, wall thicknesses, weld quality, the list is long and for the most part beyond the scope of somebody without enough experiance to understand what the key points are and to also compare these points against other brand names to make a informed opinion of whats good and not.

It all sort of points back to buying a reputable brand of manifold where years of development, trial and error has perfected its design and construction, all the bugs would have been sorted by then.

It also helps when the manifold carries a lifetime warranty against cracking.....go crank 30-40-50 Psi and a 6 boost and its right at home glowing, just another walk in the park for it.....

My eye sight also started going after 42, im turning 50 in 2-3 months, im useless without glasses now, one pair for PC and closeup detailed work, another pair of multifocals for everything else including driving.

Maybe this forum needs a senior citizens area where we can have a whinge about all the loud young folk here. :)

Back to the topic, im sure there are other good manifold brands out there, not just 6 Boost, it comes down to knowing for sure that you got the choice right, i couldnt so i just went with whats known and proven, a few $100 did not make it worth the risk.

If your choise is going to be goverened by a few hundred bucks, call around to a few people for prices, we got our 6 Boost made to order through PJ Quick bits with the chrome ceramic coating finish.

Sort of why I asked the question in the first place.

competition is good for our manufacturers as it keeps prices reasonable and keeps them innovating and creating new products.

I am really surprised a magazine like Zoom hasn't jumped on board to test out a few of these manifolds, what do the drift teams use, do they make there own or does everyone just go buy 6 boost and don't exploit different products potential advantages.

May be I am just someone who asks too many questions but I like to think out side the box, I'm not a tight ass when it comes to spending money but I want value for money and if a product will do what I want and is just as good quality for a better price then I will buy that one.

As you would appreciate doing a build is not a cheap exercise and saving $300 here and there can make a huge difference between a $30 k build and a $50k

I'm not looking to build a track car or do time attack or boost upto 40 psi so I'll do some more research and see what I come up with

Well after a lot of searching around it looks like I will have to have a complete custom manifold made to fit my build as the standard off the shelf manifolds won't fit.

I can weld fairly well with stick, oxy and mig but never had a go at Tig welding so I'm off to purchase a Tig welder, collector etc and going to do it myself.

Plus I can use the Tig for other jobs on my project

Good luck. Besides being able to weld you need some design skills. Both 6Boost and Sinco make custom manifolds but I guess doing it yourself will reduce costs (apart from many hours) to the point where you can try again if your first effort doesn't measure up.

They do make custom manifolds but not at the same price as an off the shelf unit.

My project is bit of fit and see so it's probably going to be the better option to do it myself and up skill myself also.

At least then I can make all my own intercooler pipes and fab up the sump etc

And if I stuff it up I'll just do it again

You've now set down a more detailed path... See someone that might do '6,000kms' on a manifold might only being doing it with street driving so it's not going to have heat in it for extended periods etc.

Where someone with a manifold that does 10 track days a year, 10mins sessions - asks a LOT more of a manifold in terms of testing how good a product is.

Someone like Zoom isn't really going to struggle to test something like that with any level of detail.

You then also take into account people that have 'cracked' manifolds might have had other factors involved like not hanging/suspending the exhaust correctly, so when running under high temps it's put weight on it and bent/cracked it and they then blame the manifold for that... That's certainly happened quite a bit as you can't really expect a manifold to be indestructible in that instance.

I also know people who've pulled the turbo(s) off only to find the manifold cracked then, otherwise they didn't know and it could've been there for 6 months etc.

Look at it this way - what are the most important things in a turbo set-up first and foremost? The turbo/manifold are as they govern the power, response and so on... So you focus the money there over anywhere else if push comes to shove as a bad choice there affects everything.

My Sinco manifold was custom made for me and cost about $400 more than the basic 6boost. Its about 3 years old and as well as being my daily I do about 6 -10 track days a year and it has been flawless. Mike from Sinco makes manifolds for a lot of drift cars, drag cars and circuit racers as well as street and show cars so his designs are well tested and proven on the track as well as on the dyno.

I am going to build the manifold myself, CnC collectors can be purchased for a reasonable price as can the flanges.

My build is unique as in as far as I know what I am doing hasn't been done with this engine before, therefore many things will be have to be custom made.

At the end of the day if the manifold I make doesn't perform as well as a professionally made one there are benefits and downfalls

I learn a new skill and can do other custom parts/ jobs

If it works I save money

If for some reason I balls it up and it doesn't work then at least I can send what I have off to a pro so they have a template to go by, and I have still learnt a skill.

All up for me the upside out ways the down side.
