Cool, your setup rocks so it obviously works!

Are you using a non R33 GT-R set of Splitfires that don't have the inbuilt ignitors?

R33 GTR coils don't have ignitors built in, only the 34's do. But yeah, I threw the standard ignitor module which lives on the cover in the bin, wired the new one in and bingo, no more missfire. Same thing happened with Joeys car at around the same power (400 ish rwkw).

Also sent one to Melbourne (DAZ) and it worked for him too. He is making close to 500 kw on chequered's dyno.

I've got the AEM ignitor (http://www.aemelectronics.com/8-channel-twin-fire-ignition-module-670) which I presume is much the same thing as the Morristech.

I'll get a set of Splitfires and see how we go!

The Z32 upgrade sadly isn't a plug and plug affair for the R32/R33 GTR, however is for the A31/C33/R31/Z32 owners with the PTU with square electrical connectors; for the R32/R33 this kit does make for an easy conversion if you're handy with a wire unpicker. We can also help with a new coil pack harness.

when I bought my haltech, I got a free HPI6 in the deal.. I was interesting in using it but read on some supra forums having quite a few problems with them... So I'm unsure at this point if its worth it. I also asked haltech about it and they were answer were that the std unit should be similar to the HPI6..

Anyone heard /used the kenne bell boost-a-spark ? It appears to be a better optien than the hks box.

One would think that current technology would be more effective/efficient compared to 22yo technology.

Amplified spark should provide greater spark and burn efficiency.

Unfortunately I cant find tech specs and internal diagrams of either to compare.

Obviously those who have had issues at greater power levels have resolved these with after market units. Morristech etc..

So that speaks volumes.

Question now Is - Is there a benefit for lower power levels? Say 300 to 400kws

The later gen AEM gear seems to be great value for money.

In my opinion it's a better option than a straight ign module and gives most of the advantages of CDI without the draw backs.

It's very hardy too... Some water got into the loom plug, shorted between outlet and ground (500+ vdc), just blew a neat hole on the side of the plug and kept on chugging.

I use it in conjunction with a custom loom and splitfires.... absolutely no issues with spark yet.

send me a pm so i dont forgot but will ask my tuner if he feel like I should use it or not! At the end, he's the boss, he's the one whos tuning it.

Here's a copy/paste from haltech tech support regarding the use of HPI6 in conjoncture with CDI or kenne bell boost-a-spark:

The boost a spark or HKS twin power would be unnecessary with a unit like the Haltech HPI6. The Haltech HPI 6 is able to supply up to 15 amps of current through a standard inductive coil as long as the coil has the capacity for 15 amps of current. Most coils do not have this much potential, so the Haltech HPI is already providing the maximum spark energy that the coil will allow. Once you have reached the limit of the HPI6 unit, we usually suggest moving up to a CDI unit such as the M&W Ignition systems units that we stock.

So maybe the HPI6 is already overkill for a standard bnr32 ignition system, hence why the tech told me it wasnt necessary to use the HPI6 ?

If you already have a HPI6 then I would use it. It will make it easier to use some bigger coil packs later if you feel you need them. Essentially with the stock coil packs it will optimize current delivery...

If you need more than the factory style set up, 450kw+ sort of territory then you go two ways:

- CDI for a race car

- Twin spark or aftermarket ign (non cdi) what ever you like.

As a side note, I'd stay away from a 'boost-a-spark'. There is an excellent local supplier for a very similar product.

Please educate me.. tell me more ? From haltech post, any cdi or even the boost-a-spark ( which is not a cdi) was not needed either and going LS2 is more complicated tha some people tend to say it. ( need to fab bracket, make sur it clear strut bar, etc.

I have new igniter harness, new oem coilpack and HPI6, I think this will be enought for my -5s setup but for a long time I was interesting in adding the BAS to my system ( before I bought the hpi6/haltech ecu)

ICE make a really nice 16V supply module that I have used with stock ign set ups on pre-(internal ignitor coil pack) rb's. I think this would be a valuable and reasonably inexpensive mod later if you need a little more kick using stock style set up.

With a new harness, new coil packs and -5's you'll be fine. Just use the HPI 6.... happy days.
