What sort of modifications would I need to fit a R34 GTT Auto box into a series 1 R33 GTS-T Auto?

I don't think a simple bolt in swap would work? So do I need the steering wheel, ECU and gearstick from the 34? Will an R34 neo engine ECU even work on a series 1 RB25DET?

Just to clarify I don't need any of the tip tronic features. I just want a fresher auto box.

The other issue is My R33 GTS-T seems to have a 5 speed auto. So I will be downgrading to 4 gears with the new box.

Cheaper and easier to get an R33 auto rebuilt, and that's accounting for the unicorn sprinkles and other expensive shit that is apparently built into the price of rebuilding autos.

Otherwise, yes, you will need the R34 ECU (which includes the TCU) and no, it won't like all of the S1 R33 sensors. CAS wiring is different, the AFM is different, knock sensors are possibly different, there are differences in idle control, boost sensor, traction control and ABS systems....the list is long enough.

Yeah agree. Just get your gearbox rebuilt to handle a bit more. At least then you will know its built for what your throwing at it, it will fit back in the car, and will work as it used to (apart from the way it shifts etc if you choose to get it upgraded like this)

The temptation is I have found a very low Km auto box on still on a fresh r34 donor car for next to nothing. I can also pull the ECU TCU, AFM, steering wheel, gear selector, wiring loom etc off the car. A rebuild will send me way over my budget so I was wondering what it would take to get the 34 box working in the 33. Heck it would be cheaper to pull the neo motor off that car too compared to a single auto box rebuild.

My r33 has no ABS or TCS so you you can scratch those off the list at least.

I am definitely not paying for a rebuild as If I was spending that much I would do a manual conversion. IF the 34 box isn't an option I will buy a auto box off an r33 for $50 and fit that. Its a shame becayse they are next to impossible to find off a low km not abused car. If anyone locates one in syd area let me know.

Your r33 box isn't 5 speed. It has a lock up torque converter, which is what makes you think it's shifting to 5th, but it is just the converter not slipping anymore.

R34 box into r33 wiuld be a world of pain due to the unknown wiring.

I think thats likely the case. Though apparently there some r33s that came with 5 speed autos. RE5R01A.

It's the lack of ABS and TCS that will cause the problems. R34 ECU will throw codes. Can only be circumvented by Nistuning it. That's not a huge issue though. If it were me, I'd do the whole engine conversion. But then, if it were me, I wouldn't do any work to keep an auto in the car. That amount of work would be better aimed at a manual conversion.

I recall seeing a russian page about someone showing the differences between tye a and b trans. google translate didn't work too well and was confusing, but one thing I think was the solenoids were reversed.

    • You see R34 GTRs listed for 200-300k are they really selling for these prices? Kinda seems like the same ones listed all the time.
    • Only needed to pull out the seats, center console and gear shifter surround, took a weekend and a fair few beers. You get to look forward to finding all sorts of weird shit under the seats and carpet, I pulled out a Chinese dudes passport from 2003, 220 yen and a condom wrapper 😆
    • Well, turns out not a lot happened from back then to now, between life again, and working on 3 separate other cars (only one of which was mine, and will now be departing the household soon).   So I decided with the whole "don't go outside, it's a cyclone!" Turning in to being not a whole lot, I ventured down to the garage, found a couple of water leaks in the shed (the main one I've already fixed), and then ended up "stuck" as it started pouring rain, and I didn't want to walk back inside in the pouring rain. This meant I ended up taking a look at the Skyline, and trying to work out what past Matt had been upto. I retraced a few things out from scratch, added the rest of the power feeds in that I needed for the indicators, and headlights. Double checked I'd wired a few things up correctly (and worked out how I wired a few things to begin with), updated my sparse notes. Added one of the ground points. Oh, and got really really dusty, as the car is quite dirty. Wrote up quickly what should be left for me to do with the wiring too. Adding the below photos more for my records than anything else. I need to make myself a proper book for the car that details everything, and how I've done it, but for now, this is my records... The third image is my most important one for me, and I need to draw it out into a proper schematic eventually. The last photo is my re-written list, I'd have put it on the white board, except I had to take the white board down to fix one of the water leaks.
