Hi, just bought a 1999 R34 GT-R , it has a z-tune carbon fibre bonnet with vents. Are these vents a problem for DD use in the rain.

They say I can tune it up to 750hp, but I will set it at 600, it has an OS Giken quat-plate clutch and I must admit I stalled it and did a roo hop or 2 a few times on the trail drive, but after 10 Mins it got better :)

The clutch is new and from what I have read it will become a bit more forgiving as a DD drive after some Ks and experiance.

I have been driving a 2003 350GT Auto Jap import for 7 years that I put an APS twin Turbo kit on, nice slick car but I miss driving a manual, do you think there will be much difference 0-100 between the cars. The TT350GT should be sub 5sec.

You will have to understand, I have been driving for a long time, first car 1936 Dodge :), no track and know sfa about modern cars, but I do like to drive.

Regards

Pete

Thanks, the paper work states it is genuine:/

have you had anything to do with a quad clutch, it was easy enough on the foot and I read where they were supposed to be hard to use and tough on the leg, S I am short 71 and it easy????

But it engaged within a short distance, seemed like 1/4 to 1/2 inch?

clutch will be hard to drive with. I dont recommend driving in the rain with a vented bonnet - Will cause corrosion & water to pool around your spark plugs if your seals are a little dodgy.

600hp 34 will smash the v35 in acceleration...except between 0-4000 rpm lol

Will be good to see someone in forster with a GTR. Something to perve at when i fly over to visit my parents. I had silver r34 gtr that was floating around forster a few years ago.

Hi Wedge

Thanks for the info, not sure what to do until I have a good look at the bonnet when I get it, it is new but not used for 6 years so I guess the seals will be fine with a bit of TLC

It is being tuned from the car sales mob, they said it can be safely tuned to 800HP but I do not believe them and think the fuel system would have to be upgraded to get the 800?

The 350GT with the twin turbo kit goes very well and surprises many blokes as it looks sleepy

Next time you are coming over to Forster let me know, I am in the Keys.

Pete

if its a genuine nismo bonnet it will have ducts for rain water to be managed, the engine will not get wet, if its just a copy bonnet there will usually be no rain water protection...

It worries me that you say the car dealer is tuning it for you?

and that they give you a HP potential of the car, what a load of BS

I dont understand why you would tune to a particular power point?

why not just tune to a safe point in terms of afr, det and heat???

Hi FYA

Thanks for you information about the bonnet, it has a Nismo Body kit including a Z-Tune Carbon Fibre Bonnet, from Advan Preformance at Auburn.

The previous owner spent $42k at Croydon Racing Developements and that is where it is now to be tuned. I have the invoice statement on it and have spoken to the people at CRD about the tuning. I asked them to take it to a safe level and they indicated that should be around 600hp but will not know until they put it on the Dyno, maybe more, maybe less??.

I told them at this stage about 600hp woud be OK and if I want more I would get back to them. They were concerned if I take it to a high level my fuel supply may have to be upgraded and then I might have to look at some other mechanical modifications but I would think at a safe setting it will be more than enough for me at this stage, who knows what the future may bring :w00t:

Thanks again and I appreciate any input from you blokes on the site.

PS ;Still a little worried about the quad clutch but a the worst I guess I can change it for something a bit more DD drivable, but when I drove it on the trial drive it seemed much easier than some posts I have read so I guess some time on the road/traffic will fix that?

oh the dealer is advan performance, enough said then...

shame you wanting it as a daily though... I couldnt even bring myself to drive my r33 daily after all the work Ive put into it...

this thread def need pics

probably drive the TT350GT more often, well after I nail the quad clutch and then on some hill starts, that should be fun for a while, ride em cowboy:)

Once I have the R34 home I will post some pics of both

It is going to be interesting being back in a manual again, had a TT 300ZX import for 7 years and that was a fun car and never missed a beat.

but, it did drive back from adelaide

but srsly, thanks again :)

No

Well maybe but it is a T78 who knows what they say on car sale info

It was at Edward Lee's Japanese imports , he sold the car some 5 years ago and the bloke had some hard times and resold it back to them after doing a lot of Mods, have the paperwork on Mods and have checked through the companies involved, all good

oh, Edward Lee's... and you didnt hear some of the bad experiences from that dealer???

I read your estimated 800hp capable car only made really low numbers on dyno, Im kinda not surprised.

I hope your not getting the car dealer to arrange any mods or tuning.

HAHAHA, I know what you are talking about, most of them are full of it but you expect it. :yucky:

Yes he is doing the tune and as usual there will be some haggling about stuff ,the contract is signed but I think I know what I am getting, so not too many supprises, well I hope

I have spoken to Croydon Racing Developements and they have confirmed the work sheet(4 pages) and are doing the tune, I have another list of mods from Advan Performance Auburn, they did 9 mods, 2 of them were Nismo Bodykit including a Z-Tune Carbon Bonnet, Nismo 2-way LSD and all the mods together would be about $50k, that is more than what I paid for the car , so I am happy enough.

The outside is very good (Changing the wheels), the inside is crappy but I am an old upholsterer and maybe I will get off my butt and do it up a bit.

It was stated that the car had 17,000 Kls on it, well for each wheel and the spare maybe, I have never seen a car look so good outside and so crappy inside. But nothing that cannot be fixed up with a bit of TLC.

Just busting to get it home, well the drive home should be interesting with the Quad Clutch , see if I can find my old saddle there will be a little fun on the City drive but I have over 300Ks on the road and the Lakesway is a great drive if you can miss the pot holes

Well the car has been on the Dyno, no real surprises, 338 awkw

They put in a HKS duel solenoid boost controller and said if I wanted too, after I finalized the sale they could get much more with a fuel system upgrade and a new camshaft , this would take it to another level, I think I will be OK with what I have for a while and maybe down the track do it.

It makes you wonder how car yards can make these types of outrageous claims with out repercussions.

Spoke to the CRD and they said it was a good unit and can get a lot more out of it with the mods I mentioned.

I am sure I will be happy with it , plenty of grunt for a dd

Had a good look at the bonnet and some photos of a Z-tune bonnet , not the same. There is no Nismo logo, there are no ducts and it looks different in the vents, so apart from the work done at CRD most of what the car yard said was bullst.

Would happen to know if there are after sales plates or ducts than can be added to the bonnet I have?

On the bright side, after a couple of days I have got the quad clutch under control and it is easy to use, I heard it was going to be hard on the peddle , it is easy enough and hardly any difference to the TT300ZX I had ages ago

Found a quiet place and gave it a bit of power and dropped the clutch, even at 338awkw there is plenty of grunt :w00t:

The ducting is optional on the nismo bonnet. Technically you have an S-tune bonnet - if it is a gunine nismo bonnet. you can buy the z-une ducting seperatly for ~$1,000 - part number: 16554-RRR45

Thanks Wedge , they do not miss with the cost of these things, there is no Nismo logo so I guess it is not an original but maybe the ducting will do the job anyway

Really starting to enjoy the car as I get to know it better and learn a bit each day. I think the more you know about something the better you can appreciate it.

In today for a full service and fix an oil leak , hope it is nothing too serious

    • Damn it, I was at work last night, and stayed in a room there during the storm with the car outside, but undercover, I just went downstairs and well....there was a large steel locker that has come from some place last night, it wasn't anywhere I could see yesterday, and yeap, it landed on the fraking car....of course it did..... LOL So, I'll need to take it back for paint and panel, luckily it was only the boot that took the hit, so it could have been worse Serves me right for staying at work and getting on the cans with some of the boys
    • Yeah, really happy with how it all turned out As for aftermarket lip, nah, I'm not really a fan for practically reasons on a street car that gets driven everywhere  I did have the full lower kit on my 2015 STI, but found the front lip scrapped alot, even at stock 4x4ish ride height As the NC sits now, with the lowest point of the car at 110mm, so just legal, some steep driveways and steep speed humps will still "just" scrap those little plastic OEM air dam thingies on the undertray just before the front wheels
    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
    • Awesome writeup and details. Thanks for sharing the story so far. I can relate to parts of it with my previous car and some of the issues I had to deal with.
