I need a set of wheels that turns out to be a bit odd sized (16 x 6.5 , / 4/ 114.3 , / 38 to 43 off set ) and after searching around and being fed bullsit , extortionate prices and being fraked around by possibly the most ignorant section of the motoring industry for about a week I'm going offshore for them.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the dollar limit on imported parts is before import tax kicks in ?

I think it used to be $1000.00 before tax kicked in but that was ages ago , also is it per item or is it on total of an order ? including freight or just the parts themselves ?

The last stuff I rought in was a set of tuffdog adjustable shocks for my Jeep and they only came to about $650 all up .

Any help or pointers/links would be really appreciated.

It's still $1000 on non-alcohol/tobacco products. It is for a whole shipment, so if you buy 4x things at $270 each in the same go there is a high likelihood of being taxed. If you offset when you buy the stuff (i.e. $700 one week and $700 the week after) then I think it is considered a separate taxable entity, so you won't get charged import duties.

Thanks for that , yup , still a grand, it looks like it's just the value of the goods and doesn't include the courier fee , which is all good , I'm going to contact customs just to be sure , the wheels and freight come to $996 all up so I'm to close to the frakin line to make a mistake ,

I'll post if freight is included in the taxable cost.

sorry to burst ur bubble but...here's wats on the website

GST is paid on the Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI).

The VoTI is the sum of:

  • the Customs value (Cval)
  • transport and insurance cost (or postage and insurance) (T&I)
  • any duty payable

Nope, got it wrong.

This ONLY comes into effect when the value of the goods is greater than $1000aud.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I called customs this morning and they informed me it's the cost of the goods only , so under a grand nada over $1k + 5% customs add that to the cost of the goods , then add another 10%GST .

So $1001 bucks +freight becomes +5%=$1050.50 +10%GST=$1155.55.+freight.

The one thing I didn't ask is if the goods are over a grand does the freight stay in or out for calculating customs fee and GST . :domokun:

$999.00 + freight becomes $999.00.+freight :whistling:

Just watch the $999 when buying o/seas as if exchange rate changed it could go over the $1,000 thresh hold. Really depends on how anal the customs inspection is at the time but it does happen. e.g you pay for something say in US dollars and from when it's sent to when it arrives in customs the Oz dollar drops thus your item is now worth more and goes over the 1k mark and could get stung with duties and gst. Best to have exporter list it around the $975 mark to play it safe.

yup...forgot to mention that

what abt multiple packages that come in around the same time? heard that they would hold all the packages and calculate total value

    • But, do I have to? 😬
    • While doing my tailgate struts I found some rust. Also replaced my bonnet struts. Such a cool satisfaction with that job.
    • So I removed as much as I could from both sides. The shop vac did a great job of clearing 99% of it. I got it all as clean as I could and then absolutely drenched the whole lot in the rust converter. Tonight or tomorrow I'll hammer it again. The cavity must be close to 400mm in length and surprisingly I was able to get it right to the back.  I'll quickly reassemble and then pretend I never saw it. I'll post pics (for me to ignore later) soon.
    • Yea she is a hoot to drive
    • I have always resisted the urge to go silly. 8" wide wheels and street friendly spring rates? Check. (Let's not talk about the steadily increasing spread of spherical joints across my suspension!!) Stock turbo, run at 12 psi? Check. Lasted for~?10 years before it died. Highflow put on rather than seizing the opportunity to go G45. You don't need 300 rwkW, let alone the more massive numbers that seem to be essential these days, to have a car that is already way too powerful and fast for a streeter. ~250rwkW is fine. I've never exceeded 200, although I will sneak up above it if and when I manage to get my finger out and do what needs to be done to use the highflow's capacity. You don't need $10k worth of CF bits glued onto the outside. You don't need razor sharp ankle cutting front splitters. You don't need the car to be 2" off the ground. You don't need flawless paint, mirror finished wheels, brand new indicator lenses, etc etc. All these things just make the car impractical and will cause you pain when they get damaged, which is inevitable for a street car. A few nice additions are good. Good seats are good. A nice stereo is good. A/C is good! (46° on the road yesterday and my A/C is degassed again. Was moderately traumatic driving home!) The main reason I stick with a mildly modified old Skyline is that I have had it for >25 years, the mods are the rolling result of 25 years of things dying and being upgraded opportunistically, coupled with a few "just 'coz" ones. And I hate almost all modern cars. If I was a young buck starting out now.... I wouldn't bother. Cars have a few years left where there is any possibility of interest or fun. Thereafter there will be no such thing allowed or possible. Any time, money and effort spent now on a project would just be a waste.
