Hey guys, (1997 R33 GTS25T)

I had a bad oil leak in my engine bay recently so I decided to track down where it's coming from.

So I gave the areas a degrease etc. Went for a blat around the block a couple times, and looks like I can see where there are two link. Which match up with oily areas.

Am I right in saying this is from the Cam / Rocker cover? This is just a rubber gasket with the half moon bits as well correct? (What the interwebs told me :P )

Another question I wanted to ask was the bolt and rubber washers (Especially the washers) are looking tired. Perhaps the last owner over tightened these? Where can I get more?

I will probably just order new gaskets anyway for piece of mind. Your guys options will be much appreciated :)

Initially thought it was from that connection to head, but looking at this looks like it is coming from the join first then down onto it.

i did my rocker cover gasket not too long ago, was leaking a little as well, not enough to drop down the drive way just enough to look messy, i bought mine from Taark https://www.taarks.com/

you need two gaskets and two half moons(for each rocker cover, piece of piss to install too

as for the bolt and washer, maybe ask him if he stocks them too, i think he sells sr ones so might be able to help you out

Yeah looks like the rocker cover gaskets. They do leak when they are old and tired. Its an easy job as MatthewT85 said, but surprisingly so many people ignore it. I had a leak on my RB20 similar to yours, changed the gaskets and half moons and she was sweet. You should be able to get the rubber bits from Nissan, I dont think they will be too expensive. If not, there are after market parts for anything these days just have a look on the net.

  • 4 weeks later...

yes the 2 cam covers are about $70 and the 2 moons were pretty cheap but those rubber washer things are 2 metal washers with a big rubber section between them, they look surprisingly big and tall when you buy them new but they compress down, i didnt replace all the washer things cos it would have cost way too much cos you need quite a few of them as you know

oh and i think you need a lil silicon sealant for that back moons to help them seal to the gasket, im pretty sure thats what the nissan engine manual says as well, i dont know why the hell they didnt make the half moons attached to the main cam cover gasket for, it would have been so mush simpler

yep makes no sense, the sr20 gasket has the half moons and gasket in one piece...

also i think when i did mine, i put gasket glue on the 'curved' edge of the half moon, i dont think i put it on the flat edge

it was about a year ago now though, so not 100%... there are guides going around though

    • Nah, you failed to pay your washer cover subscription and BMW have revoked your access.
    • Haha thanks Lith,  So it's currently working quite well and the torque reduction is setup and working phenomenal. It also got a custom torque convertor from All Fast in WA. Stall speed somewhere around 5500rpm unlocked but still with the lockup. The car went back onto the dyno after a 3yr hiatus (even with the dbw, and other mods completed in this time) managed to make ~515kw at all 4 hubs. Sean setup the Torque reduction which now sounds awesome and working well. We setup adjustable torque controlled launch control aswell.  Man what a feature. Especially when drag racing on street tyres I Managed to get out to the drags late last year and tick a huge bucket list item off of running mine and the cars first 9. Car went a 9.98 @142 Still had the young fellas car seat in the back aswell.  This was on 255/40/17 Nankang AR-1.  Currently the Turbolamik is still completing it's own torque calcs and managing shift times from there. Unfortunately emtrons can export is still a little restrictive to export the ecu calculated torque just yet but I have recently been suggested a work around that I just haven't had a chance to trial yet.
    • Yeah its bad eh. Ey! Watch your mouth. Yep, spot on. The rear's are always gone too though from brake checking. I had them perilously close to a tree that we had taken down. I think the tree peeps may have taken it. Either for a trophy, or accidentally.
    • f**kin' yikes! That insulation is the shittest stuff I have ever seen. You need to do an insurance job on that f**ker, pronto. WRT to the washer cover, I would have said that there'd have to be some at a wrecker, then remembered that it's a BMW, and reasoned that every single wrecked one would have been tailgating and so the front end would be trashed.
