I'll chuck my 2cents in here as well. I've never driven an Evo on the track but have had my fair share of club track days.

If you can pick your track and your goal as a driver too, that will help you decide. Driving any car on it's limit, Evo or GTR isn't that easy and will take some time. Don't expect to just go out and do fantastic times, enjoy the learning experience and set realistic goals. Do you enjoy tigher technical driving or bigger open flowing tracks? It's a lot harder than you might think, and just picking a car won't get you the times if that is what you're after. Seat time and hard analysis of your driving will teach you that.

I think 250kw GTR or 200kw EVO is a good starting point. Plenty of power to learn to drive well and lay down decent times.

I personally enjoy the rawness of the GTR and the fact that it makes you drive. I know a lot of people say 4wd is a cheater car, but it WILL bite you until you learn to drive the GTR. Because it is only "full" 4wd when the rear wheels are spinning faster than front, it will not help you recover from an extreme tail out situation unless you are aggressively staying in it. And that's a lot harder to do in that split second reaction than you think. It took me a good 4-5 track days over two years to retrain my reactions. If you lift in that situation you get no advantage to the fronts, weight transfer to the front unloads the rear tyres for even less traction and you come spinning around.

That's what makes the GTR so fun to drive on the track. I'm sure I'd go faster if I wasn't so aggressive, but aggressive driving is FUN! I mean look at all the car review guys like Chris Harris and Jeremy C. Track driving is as much about fun as it is about times.

An EVO on the other hand being full time AWD is going to punish you for being aggressive. The F/R bias is all controlled and trying to keep the car in traction and avoid the tail out situation. For that you are rewarded with more grip and therefore theoretically better times.

I say theoretical because experience counts more than the car. Plain and simple. At our SMSP South Day, I honestly expected the EVO's to have the advantage on the smaller tighter track. But the top 3 cars (I was third fastest) were all GTR's.

Hope that gives you some more to think on.

When you get a lap right with the GTR it's more rewarding as with the Evo it's quite clinical, don't get me wrong the Evo is a good track car if you are into them but personally didn't have that wow factor.

Yes the GTR is more expensive to maintain and all that but who cares the heart wants what the heart wants lol

Would be good for you to find a track day that has passenger sessions and jump in a GTR and Evo and see for yourself

I've driven behind lots of GTRs and Emos. :P

The above few posts (bar the rubbish about mx5s-lol) is good material. I found the corner exit speed of the emo much more impressive and harder to gain on compared to the GTRs. The braking advantage is also well in the Emos favor.

But then again, you talking about something that just doesn't have the character of the GTR. For value and outright speed, the emo hands down. If you don't care too much about being #1, and want entertainment and fun (and have a sizable budget...) then grab a GTR.

So what I'm getting from this thread is if you want cheap boringly fast lap times buy the emo, if you want not so cheap fun filled exciting edge of the seat blows your mind fast lap times that make you the envy of men everywhere buy a GTR

Meh to anything 4wd with ABS if you want a track car....somethign to punt around and not actually racing. I am with evil and the likes of an MX5. You actually learn how to drive a car...not bludgeon pedals and saw at steering wheels.

I also genuinely believe the interest of chasing tenths in driving holds your interest way longer than in something that is naturally far more consitant because it has ABS and awd meaning you dont have to be anywhere near as accurate or consistent when driving it

But if you want a car that is numb then go the EVO5. Price is good, low weight. grunt from engines and loads of upgrade parts.

if you want a cheap dedicated track car to learn in buy a under 2l IPRA car, or like Chris and Mark did, go the MX5

Already built, easy to find, cheap, easy on tyres and pads.

Don't worry about Evos vs GTRs if you want regular time on the track.

A GTR will cost 20k per year to run hard at the track.

Buy something you'll love driving. I would go straight to the newest model you can afford.

Both cars are very quick, the GT-R will tend to scull your money a lot quicker though.

A mate bought an Evo8 today, I took it for a spin. Surprisingly good car, I did not expect the build quality to be that good. Very quick of course, off the mark (so out of corners) it is a machine. I can imagine it being easier to drive (so generally quicker). It would be very interesting to drive it on a track.

Just remember, if you decide on the GT-R, you'll have to treat it as a RWD that has the ability to pull itself straight. The R32's ATTESSA is pretty slow so you can get some good, easily controllable angles hahaha.

After driving said mate's Evo and then jumping straight into my car, I wish I bought an R33 for the better build quality :(. Sitting in an R32 feels like a sports car, whereas R33/R34 and Evos feel more taxi-spec. I'm glad I bought the 32R though. You have to decide whether to buy it on logic/reasoning (Evo) or on emotion (GT-R).

What do you guys think about a MY02-03 STI. Was talking to a truck driver at work today who races a MY02 STI (bug eye). And he was saying its a very very good cheap reliable track car.

I know the 6 speed in the sti's is awesome but don't know much about the engine and driveline strength.

Wondering what you guys think about them ?

I know the 6 speed in the sti's is awesome but don't know much about the engine and driveline strength.
