My old wheel is falling apart, so I need help on installing my aftermarket steering wheel...

Before u ask..yes I've done a search 2 find all I can about steering wheel installation...I just need some help in answering some question I have b4 I start fumbling around.

What I need help on are:

1. I bought a boss kit for my steering wheel (its an autotecnica). The box was helpfully written in japanese, which meant I spent 1hr going WTF and searching for my old jap textbooks.Anyway, pic on box showed that a ring/spacer is needed...when I got the box, there was no such thing in it...so I"m just wondering is that n option? DO u need it.The boss kit came with 3 wires, the horn unit thing, and a steering colum cover... and a thick washer..datz it...is that all u really need?

2. I've noticed that a lot of peeps been having problem with their hicas after installing an aftermarket steering wheel. I was hoping 2 find out what is the correct step 2 ensure that after installing, the hicas doesn't stuff up...

3. Is there a spacing requirement or something when installing the wheels? COz on the box it said somthing 5.8 for a skyline R33. Hmmmz..

4. Well, thank u for reading this far...any constructive feedback is helpful. I'll keep u posted of any probs/solution..when i finish.

From my experience, whack it on and hope for the best. When I put my AM steering wheel, the boss kit was the wrong type, and didnt cancel the indicators and was very hard to steer. Since got another one and its all going good TOUCH WOOD

Hi guys, thankz for suggestions/advice...As promised, I'll fill u in on da installations.

1. Park the car such dat the wheels are straight. Make it easier to take off the steering wheel.

2. For virgin wheel installer with the original steering wheel, the wheel cover ( which have the Skyline symbol) can be pry off with a flat head screwdriver. There should b 3/4 clips holding it in place.

3. Disconnect da wiring inside. The original only come with 1 wiring for the horn. Aftermarket have 2 wires, a positive and earth wire. Just plug da positive into the socket on steering column, and for earth find a suitable grounding source (ie for me I plug the earth end to the boss kit).

4. After removal of the wiring, there is a big hex head nut on the inside, holding the steering wheel in place. Unbolt it such that it's still retained by a couple of thread.

5. Whack the crap out of the steering wheel ( kidding :) Just hit it firmly) towards you, so that the wheel loosen from it's bedding/groove. (that's why the bolt is handy, don't want the wheel to come off suddenly)

6. Once wheel is loose, remove the bolt, then the wheel.

7. For all AM steering wheel, there should be a corresponding boss kit specific to the car. ie, when ordering a boss kit, ask for your car model.

8. For the boss kit I ordered, it was easy to installed, coz it had the word TOP printed on it :D. U should align the boss kit such dat the word 'TOP' is....on the TOP side(at 12 oclock position)..hehe. U should also notice that there is a slot in the boss kit for the electrical connector. Just align the electrical connector to fit the slot.

9. Wire everything 2gether again. Positive go to electrical connector on steering column. Earth is wired to the boss kit.

10. Tighten the steering column bolt ..and everything else is straight forward after that.

Note : There was no probs with HICAS playing up.

Yeap, there are specific boss kits for hicas models. I installed a standard boss kit for 32 (from repco who didnt know anything about hicas models) last night and it just aint steering right, so its getting returned. Best to go to a performance specialist shop.

I have bought the same boss kit, and I was wondering what you did with the 3rd wire?

The one that has a huge plug on one end of it....

And I assume the washer goes between the bolt and the boss kit?

i got a 2nd hand genuine steerin wheel for my 32 but its a series 2 one and therefor it doesnt fit the hicas 'plate' on the steering column but i have since figured that the reason the hicas is stuffing up on my aftermarket is that there is two screws missing that screw the hicas'plate' to the boss so once i screw them up it should be dandy. so just a word of advice for all you ppl out there a series 2 r32 steering wheel wont fit a series one. so ive got a series 2 r32 wheel for sale if anyone wants it lol

Id love to change to a nardi steering wheel one day....

but at this stage..cant justify spending around $700 to change a steering wheel.

Also for my car there is one more problem...the airbag light flashes.......

and yes I know its not exactly "legal" to change an airbag steering wheel.....

There must be someone else out there that has bought a boss kit...

what exactly is it about the boss kit that makes it hicas, or non hicas. The only difference I see is the rectangular disc with the 2 square holes cut out...

i got a HKB one and it has 3 different models for the R32 i think ( japanese ). i have the no-110 model and the steering wheel has to be bolted on like your turning left but the wheels are straight, but the one i need is a on-115 or 112. and on my the top thing i don't think has anything to do with it... :(

Aren't their "Hicas Boss Kits" ?

hey lads, i just bought a new boss kit to put on my r33. just set it up following the instructions one of the guys posted...

i had 1 problem when i took it for a drive directly afterwards my indicators dont click off again after i have turned the corner and straightened up... like they make a click, but they dont go far enough or it doesnt click strong enough..

can anyone help me?? guidance ... anything, cos clicking the indicator off by hand is a real pain in the ass when im not used to it...

I installed a HKB boss kit on my R33 the other day. The indicators are fine, and the HICAS works fine. However, the wheels twisted while I was taking the bolt off and now my wheel is off to a 45* angle!! Oops, cant get the damn boss kit off now!! Any ideas? Tried hitting it with a hammer, but didnt work.

the standard steering wheels on 33's (not so sure about 32s) have a sensor in them. by this i mean, when you turn the wheel, the sensor reads the degree of turn and hicas will steer according. by removing this set up you will have anywhere from slight to major hicas problems. how ever you may not realise.

easy fix.... hicas lock bar lol or dont change standard wheel

its not illegal to change a 32 wheel but it is illegal to remove a 33 wheel.

this being because a 33 wheel has the center airbag and by replacing the standard wheel with an aftermarket one you are removing a safety device... same as removing seatbelts

all in all i thought f**k it and of corse put a nice small aftermarket wheel on my 33 anyway.

u can change the series one though cant ya....coz they dont have air bags

series 1 have steering wheel airbag just not passenger dash airbag

i think we need to find you a lock bar and a wheel/boss kit trent :P
