Hi gents,

I am looking for some information on the child anchor points that were unceremoniously drilled into the parcel shelf of my R34 coupe. Specifically, what are the legalities surrounding these? The only info i could find on the net was concerning children using booster seats etc.

I do not have children, nor do i intend to drive children around in the Skyline, so I would like to remove those unsightly 'anchors' - which i have done as of today, when i fitted my new 6 inch Kicker speakers.

If you look at the photo, you'll see the bars going across the speakers (factory speakers pictured). If i remove those, am I in a defectable position?

Can i simply keep only the central anchor point? (Seeing there is a large hole there anyway) I would like to cover the gashes in the speaker covers.

If i keep those bars (even though they travel right across the bloody speakers!!!) is that good enough for a policeman to see that i have the anchor points? As i said, i couldnt locate the relevant bit of legislation. (All that i could find is that literally no one else in the world can supply our baby seats, because they aren't up to the Australian standard... of course.)

Thanks!

Mick

Hi,

If it helps, to pass compliance, my car just had to have the bars under the parcel shelf. I had to go back to get the holes puched through the speaker covers once I did fit a baby seat. My opinion is that you don't need the clips, just the bars underneath so no real modifications are needed to fith them. If queried, say that the bars are there and that for fitting the baby seat, the bolt needs to be put back in with a clip. I know in our other old car, we had to buy a bolt and plate regardless and it was an AU delivered car.

Hi Damien,

Cheers for the reply! Just wonder what state you're in? I'm in NSW, not sure if this legislation differs between the states?

Overall I'd love to avoid having the bars there at all - I'm no audiophile, but I'm kinda annoyed that i have a heavy bar right across my speakers. The bar actually touches the tweeter (little speaker in the middle) of my new speakers, which i paid $100 for (so not especially cheap).

Thanks!

I would just take them out and fly away :P

I thought you could only *fly away* on the internet? lol

Hi,

I'm in QLD but I thought the restraints/compliance process is national.

It sounds like it is, and I've concluded that you don't need the clips, but do need a place to anchor the restraints (ADR defies logic again)

Some Emptynesters or DINKS have 'pretend' restraints.

I'm tossing up whether to remove the plates across the speakers (not great for audio quality) and then putting on the "fake" clips, or reinstating the plates and covering the speakers with acoustic cloth to hide the ugly hole where the clip was that i'll remove. Or maybe I'll just remove both.. haha. I just can't believe that this would lead to a defect, honestly. If I had a child in the car, damn right I'd want it to be as safe as possible, but as i dont, i completely disagree about needing the anchors.

I'd be really suprised if it were an issue when not carrying a child, but if worried just leave the anchor point there and take the bars away u would have to be very unlucky I rekon

I think that's the go, I'll have a look on the weekend how i can connect them in a non-permanent fashion though! any ideas, gents?

    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
    • Paint is only structural when applied to the outside of Chinese and Indian cars. Otherwise it should never be present between mechanical joints that were intended to be metal to metal. Pain slips, slides, cracks, compresses, and add thickness that wasn't intended to be there. It comes firmly under the category of "just no".
