I'm changing my pads and having massive dramas now. The other side went perfectly well, and I'm now stuck on the front left.

I can't seem to compress one of the pistons at all. Is it possible for these to seize up or something? The other three pistons are pushed right back (I used a c clamp, as I have done with many cars in the past).

While I'm at it I also noticed brake fluid seeping from the crack where the two halves of the caliper join - Could this be resolved by tightening the bolts that join the two halves together or is that a no-no?

Yep one of your pistons sounds like its seized. There are a few things you can do:

1: Crack the bleeder nipple & try & compress it (temp fix till you fix the weep, see step 2).

2: Get a rebuild kit & overhaul both calipers

3: Get two GOOD second hand calipers & fit them.

Agree with the above. The leaking from the joint is uncommon. Typically you just do the piston seals during a rebuild as the other stuff doesnt tend to fail, and its better not to disturb it if you dont have too. Of course in this case you would have to split the calliper and replace those seals too.

Tightening the bolts may help a little as a bandaid, but since the pistons stuffed too you really need to give it some more attention

So a local brake shop quoted anywhere from 180-220 per side, depending on condition of pistons. Looks like I'll be buying second hand :|

Possible you end up with the same problem though! In saying that, if it was my car that calliper would be in the bin as you should never shortcut on brakes!

If your located in a capital city, then I'd HIGHLY recommend a company named Hallite for the seals for the 2 halves that don't come in rebuild kits. They stock an enormous range of all compounds & sizes of seals, o-rings etc

If its leaking from the join, did you seperate the 2 halves? There is supposed to be a oring in there and your not supposed to seperate the caliper halves.

The bolts that join them are torque to yeild and not supposed to be touched......you cannot get new bolts but you could source a oring from a general pursose pack of rings.

Being torque to yield bolts, that probably explains why they aren't in rebuild kits.

Are kits available through Nissan? I'd imagine the bolts would come in a genuine kit.

Any torque to yield bolts shouldn't be reused, as they are stretched to near breaking point the first time they are torqued. Try it a second time around & they will 'soften up' (lose tension as you get near the max torque) & fail.

USUALLY any bolt that has a torque requirement that is in degrees of rotation (angle torque) will be a torque to yield.

Those types of bolts are specially made for specific applications, & you won't find them aftermarket. If you knew the tensile strength, you'd get close though.....

Nah didn't try to separate the two halves, nor tighten the bolts that join them - I could tell that wouldn't stop the leak anyway. Once I noticed it was leaking I just left it alone and based on advice given above, decided to just grab a used pair. I would happily attempt a rebuild if it was just the seized piston but I don't want to deal with splitting them open and whatever. I'm a bit surprised they (both fronts) leaked there actually. Have worked on lots of older cars with this design and never seen leaks there but anyway.

Turns out r33 parts are plentiful...probably easier than sourcing parts for my gf's fairlane ghia actually

    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.  
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
    • There is a warning that "this thread is super old" but they ignore that anyway...
    • With 10% Ethanol, we're talking 2-3% fuel consumption difference. The emissions reductions and octane boost in my opinion far outweigh this almost non existent loss.    My tanks sitting at 80%. Luckily that should go down fast as I'm on vacation again for the next two weeks.
