I am not wanting to go wild with my R32 GTR but do want to increase boost to a safe level. It has the standard ceramic wheeled turbos. I am hearing many varying opinions on safe boost level with some people saying up to 18psi.

I am wanting to know at what boost any people have experienced failures. For example, if nobody has had a failure at 14psi then I am happy to boost to that level but if ANYONE has had a failure at that boost then I won't go there (just to be safe).

Hopefully we can come up with a level that will allow me to sleep at night.

This argument is always debated, however as far as I know.. the limit of the stock ceramic turbos is around 14-15psi... you can safely achieve this by removing the restrictor. Other have run much more, but the argument is not IF but when will your ceramic turbos give in, and risk further damage to the motor by debrit.

my turbos have been running ~1bar (14-15psi) for over 20,000kms, no problems...

Best to get a tuner to do it, make sure the A/F ratios are safe etc...

i think jezzr (he posted about running an 11 on stock turbos) is running 18psi

Also depends how your driving, I don't think 1bar on stock turbos would last long on the track (correct me if i'm wrong?)

Daily driving 1bar should be fine

Bad news Ken! This was on your R32 I assume and only at 1bar. I vaguely remember you telling me at your shop only a couple of days ago how there is definitely no problems at 1 bar, just kidding!

Incidently, you know how you had my GTR on the Dyno and it ran up to 8200(rev limit???) and slight boost increase to 10psi which lead you to believe it had computer work done. Well it would seem that you were right. I pulled the computer side kick panel off and it has a Mines tuned computer with their serial numbered gold guarantee sticker on it with tamper seals that haven't been broken. It would be very interesting to see exactly what has been done to the car. I would have thought it a bit strange to have it Mines programmed when as far as I know there is only a 3inch exhaust on it and only producing 263rwhp.

By the way if any of you guys are in Perth, Ken did a pre-purchase inspection on my GTR and he is a great bloke to deal with and the inspection was very well priced too. He really knows his GTR stuff (except the safe boost level on std turbos )

I've got a 32gtr engine in my gtst and I was wondering if its worth buying a factory boost controller and hooking it up. How well do they hold boost, do they spike? I know an aftermarket one would probably be better but are they worth the extra money on a stock motor? I am a tight ass!

    • The cam I am actually putting in (a few posts up) is actually smaller than my current one. At least duration/overlap wise. All the chop stuff I hear just sounds like an engine running badly, because it is. I then envision driving it around in 1st gear and being massively sad about it bucking to the beat of said chop. There is an idle video of someone with a similar cam floating around the internet, but mine is a custom cam (so is his) so it'll never be the same, plus the fact exhausts are entirely different. What I want to do is put some bullet mufflers/race mufflers in to replace a couple sections straight pipes that currently replace the two extra cats that I don't need. But this is even further down the line!
    • I can tell you now, when the bracket that the little hydraulic ram attaches to snaps, with a subframe, and V8 from an AMG C63 on it, it sounds like someone letting shotgun off right beside you. It leaves your ears ringing, and a huge thankfulness that you never ever put a body part under something heavy that's only supported by a hydraulic lift...
    • Still not a guarantee fix. I used a high quality butyl-mastiq (the black goo that's not really silicone nor polyurethane, same stuff they use from the factory that just spreads out like melty cheese), and I still get lots of water on both sides of the trunk when raining or washing the car. I also suspect the factory spoiler rubber gasket might not be sealing well, so I'm thinking of adding a thin layer of grey silicone around the bolt holes on both sides and see if that's where it also leaks from. The biggest issue is that these cars don't come with a drain hole on each side like other coupes and hatchbacks.
    • I hate it, but maybe he could paint it Monster jam style and call it...godzilla?
    • Would seem to me to be appropriate to go GTR style bar. There are options with and without N1 vent holes, with the GTR lower lip integral (because FG copy). https://justjap.com/search?q=r32 bumper
