Humming Diff On V35 5At

Hey, does anyone else have noisy diff issues? at like 30-70kmh it really drones, even vibrates the car. I'm wondering if i'm losing power/increasing fuel consumption.

I've taken it into a shop and they confirmed using a stethoscope while it was raised. Out of inconvenience i've done nothing about it but if i'm losing power and fuel consumption I guess it may be worth to fix it sooner than later?

I'd be buying a wrecked spare but i wonder if anyone else has issues, whether sourcing a new or reconditioned would be the better solution as it may crop up again 10k down the road.

Are you sure it is the diff? does the noise come and go when you accelerate/decelerate or is it constant at those speeds regardless of throttle position?

it shouldn't be impacting fuel economy or performance unless it is about to fail big time.

I haven't heard of any other diff issues on the V35 so perhaps it has been abused earlier in its life.. eg. run with no oil.

Sounds very unusual, but I guess every bearing wears out eventually. Perhaps an indication the odometer haircut was fairly decent on your car...

A diff specialist might be able to rebuild it cheap, but for the price I have seen LSD 350z diffs going for recently, I would be going down the wrecker path with one of them, as long as the axle bolts are the same pattern...

The vibe frequency is totally proportional to the speed, not the revs. The guys at Tokyo motorsports apparently lifted the car then used a stethoscope to determine that the droning wasn't bearings or tyre related. Had a full diff service (fluids) and nothing changed. There was evidence of metal in the fluid which was dumped. Good to know it's not a common issue, may as well bite the bullet and start looking for compatible diffs. Cheers

There are bearings inside the diff too you realise, it could be a cheap fix if you haven't left it long.
