Hey all

I have stripped out a r33 series 2 skyline for track use

Im just weighing up my options for a turbo.

The main thing it will be used for is drags. 1/8th mile drags.

So i guess what id be looking for is something around the 350kw mark but with excellent response and mid range.

Top end wouldnt be needed as much?

Will be running on e85

any suggestions would be great... or anyone that has set there car up for drags and more to thge point short version would be excellent to hear from

^ what he said - maybe not SHORT gearing, but the right gearing and stall setup. You haven't said what times you're after? Strictly speaking drags are drags - for the most part (aside from gearing) you'll be setting the car up similar to get a quick 1/8th mile time as you would for a 1/4 mile time.... as the most important parts of the run are firstly the first 60ft, then the following 600ft will be where you win or lose. Beyond that point you're ultimately trying to maintain the progress you've made up to that point, the hardest stuff has already been done. The fastest 1/8th miles cars are also the fastest 1/4 mile cars, and vice versa ;)

So - if you want it semi usable on the road, but very quick over the 1/8th etc... Precision 6466, auto, NOS. Or more details on the setup and targets otherwise there is nothing stopping us from saying "Powerglide, Precision 91mm Promod turbo, NOS!!" :D

Well when I say short I mean, crossing the line in top gear at peak power

so for the 1/8th is rather short haha

Sorry should have mentioned its a track car only and never will see the road.

Have front and rear drag slicks for it already. Will have to load a pic.

My big concern is by the time I hit boost in a higher gear ill be well past the line.

Any ideas on turbo options.

About to forge it. Looking for around 350kws on e85

Manual

Still original diff in it but I am looking to swap it also. Ideas?

No head work yet

6boost manifold, plazaman front mount etc

Why such low power target? If its a drag car, go nuts! It makes no sense to me to try and keep it responsive if you are going to be launching with launch control etc, you'll just end up having to upgrade when you hit a wall. As much as I'd like to recommend all sorts of fancy things, I reckon you'll end up looking to upgrade... start off with the cheapest most reliable thing that will do that power easily and then you don't loose too much if/when you need to upgrade.

I personally would go the Hypergear SLSS2 turbo to get started, it will make the power and not be a lag monster and isn't overly expensive... then depending on how tough you build things and how long it takes to grow a pair - put a FP Super99 HTZ (or at least a Precision 6466) on it... you are going to have launch control, and always be up in the revs, you don't want to be changing turbos all the time so you can grow into it :P

It's funny on my list is a 3076 and the slss2.... externally gated.

Only reason such a low power target first off because I thought having a lag monster wouldnt be what im after due to the small track size. By the time its ready to really open up ill have run out of track

The point he is trying to make is that by using launch control you want it making as much power as possible straight off the line. It won't be a lag monster if you can get it spooled while stationary.

It's not like you leave the line and then let it spool up, in which case yes you do want a smaller turbo not a lag monster. But the whole point of drag racing is leaving the hole as fast as you can and keeping the car on boost the whole length of the track.

It doesn't matter If you are making 350kw or 500kw, you want it making power straight away and keeping that power the whole length of the track.

yeah exactly. If you're making boost at a standstill then lag isn't an issue at all. High stall & auto will get you there easily. short ratio will make sure you get the power down before the end of the 1/8.

but if you're using the factory manual box maybe an ecu that supports 2 step launch or something.. I'm not that familiar with all that so maybe someone else can weigh in.

The bottom line is that for the 1/8th mile drag your launch is EVERYTHING.

so, 350kw is nice, but if you're going the route of a forged motor as you mentioned. and possibly running and auto then why not 450? lag off the line won't be an issue and maybe you can compete with some of the old VL turbos running amazing times

Of course the question is, is it heads up racing you want to do, or just chase ET's

1 thing that irks me is seeing Turbo cars sit on the line for 30 secs trying to make boost while the car in the other lane is half way down the return road

OK, a manual does make it a little trickier - you would have a bit more issue spooling the larger turbos mentioned and keeping them on steam without revving the hell out of it.

Buy Bri73y's GT3076R HTA, wastegate and manifold....
