Hey guys,

I know that this is not a skyline related topic, as we all look after our cars too well! However, my mate has just bought a cheapo XF falcon, and inside the rocker cover all the valve springs and the head in general are covered by a thick sludge up to 2cm thick in places!! How can we clean this out? Is an engine flush additive safe, or will this just shift the sludge and block up more important bits of the engine? Should we open up the rocker cover (bugger of a job) and scrape it out? Any suggestions?? (I know he should just torch it and buy a 'line, but unfortunately he can't afford it yet!)

pull the whole head off, its a 250 crossflow, not that big a job. Get one of those plastic 2ltr pump spray cans fill it with petrol and spray the whole shit show. Buy a VRS kit prolly 100 bucks for mono torque set and put it back together. Give him a chance to look at the condition of the thing in general

I wouldnt use an engine flush in that case. What you'll end up doing is dislodging all the junk and then it'll possibly plug up your oil filter pickup screen. Hello no oil pressure and new bearings!

If it runs fine, just leave it! Otherwise you could try some diesel oil like Mobil Delvac 1300 (fairly cheap) and its got a tonne of detergents in it which will break it down slowly over time.
