Ok I got distracted and bought two more Defi gauges, oops.

...

The ones I got are exhaust temp and oil pressure.

I'm wondering if I should repurpose the oil pressure to show fuel pressure instead, given that the R34 has a factory oil pressure gauge already? Not sure of its accuracy though..

The newer "OEM" ones from Kudos etc react instantly, so if you want to get your stock Oil pressure gauge to do something, replace the current sensor with a new stock sensor and you shall notice the difference.

Ok I got distracted and bought two more Defi gauges, oops.

Any suggestions on where to mount them?

A Greddy (style) A-Pillar dual gauge pod might be an option but I'm not sure if it's a bit too much circus for my taste...

Finally got organised and installed the gauges, ended up putting them in front of the instrument cluster, see below.

Exhaust, water and oil temp in the triple gauge pod, oil pressure and boost in front of the steering wheel. It's a bit of a Christmas tree now but oh well.

  • What would be the normal operating range for exhaust temp, and where should I set the warning level?
  • Same for oil pressure, from memory my OEM gauge used to read somewhere around 4 but it's been disconnected for a little while..

Also since I couldn't find this anywhere online:

My Neo will cruise very lightly at ~450°C. Faster cruising or a little load will see 500-600°C. Moderate load will easily see over 700°C. High loads will go over 800°C, max on the gauge's memory is something like 950°C, but I reckon that got set during a boost/load cut when I was tuning the boost controller, because I don't think I've noticed anything over 900°C any other time. I think my alarm is set at 950 or so.

Oil pressure should idle in the region of 4 bar when cold, falling to maybe 2 bar when hot and rise to 6 bar or so at high revs.

Exhaust temp depends on where you mount the sensor, it should be just before the turbo. If you mount it in the dump the temp will read approximately 100c less from my testing.

Awesome thanks guys, really helpful.

The EGT sensor is in the dump, just in front of the O2 sensor, so will read less than before the turbo.

For reference, here's the peak readings from Sunday's track day (ambient temp around 24C):

  • Exhaust 900 C (at dump)
  • Water 108 C
  • Oil 117 C
  • Oil pressure 6.0 bar
  • Boost 1.45 bar (should probably dial that back a little...)

This is after the oil cooler installation with virtually no cool down laps (short sessions though), the cooler made a big difference.

What's the lowest you guys are reading for oil pressure? Mine's around 2 bar in normal driving but I have seen it drop down to around 1.2 bar when going from proper throttle to decel (clutch in). I'm guessing this is normal?

ECU Engine protection functions > Gauges

Do the defi units have an auxillary 0-5v output?

You mean for the signal? I don't think so, all the signals go into the control unit and I believe the Defi Link daisy chain is a pretty basic serial bus that drives the stepper motors in the gauges.

The gauges do have an alarm output for an external light for when the set alarm level is reached.
