Rb Crank Collar And Engine Balance

Hey guys,

I've done a search but can't seem to find the answer to my question. I've got a built RB30 short block that I bought off of somebody recently, it's never been used since being assembled and the engine has been balanced. However I noticed something, the crank still has the narrow oil drive gear and I want to have a crank collar installed.

My question is: will the engine need to be balanced again after installing the collar?

Well.... it probably wont effect it to much. Ideally it would be good practice to do it again but I wouldnt bother. Where they are adding weight is close to the centre, and its taking and adding roughly even amounts of weight on opposite sides

If you have the money to do it and can wait an extra day to get the crank back then go for it. If not then I think it will make next to no difference

Just had the same problem, bought a fresh 26/30 with n1 pump, when I pulled the pump off to fit a tomei the n1 pump was fitted on a narrow drive, can't understand why someone wouldn't do it upfront for the cost and piece of mind

My crank collars (and I'm sure they are all the same in this respect) are CNC manufactured and I can't imagine they would be other than pretty much perfectly in balance - they are quite small in the scheme of things... radius from centre of crank is tiny compared to the throw of the crank.

wouldn't it be better to put $ into a decent harmonic balancer?

i mean that in regards to the OP not the crank collars.

If its already balanced, chances are it wont take alot to re-balance the crank with a small addition like a crank collar

I'm still not even sure it would make a difference, so If OP does get it done, please post information from the report
