Only young hey?

Go to tech and get it out of the way asap. Keep looking and asking and you will find a job as a mechanic.

Do diesel plant etc and go back to the mines.

Some of us older guys go for a second trade, it makes life interesting. So you can always change later.

Dunno why youd want to be a mechanic when you could be a plumber...... :woot:

Seriously but... theres usually a bit of work in construction in canberra.

Mechanic job would be harder to find.

Mainly though...... Good luck with whatever you do. ;)

And if I only wait 1 more year I make 200 a week more for 1st year.
And by then I'll have a nice big wad of cash, tools etc.

Which is the plan.
Current boss has me jumping between stores during the week now, so It's kinda full time.
So I have started saving a bit, upto a grand of "safe" dough now.

  • 3 weeks later...

$19/hr for a tyre fitter?

thats pretty decent.

as a qualified mechanic, im on a decent wage of 23/hr.

and thats decent.....

it can be very hard to find someone willing to take on a mature age apprentice.

the key here is, find what you have fun doing.

then, have patience.

my previous manager (in a tyre shop) started out as a tyre fitter, and worked his way up.

it takes time, as most good stores, staff is a little stagnant.

but, it gives you more experience.

personally, id hire someone who stayed in their last job at least 24 months.

it shows the person to be stable/dependable and not walk out at the drop of a hat.

either way, good luck.

hope it all falls into place for you.

Fastest way to earn easy cash but with shit hours is bar work. Floor guys can earn $15-20/hr cash in hand but your also working from 6pm to 6am.

If you have a white card contact hays. Often big sites need labourers for general cleaning sweeping etc. no idea what they pay but it can give you exposure to network with particular trades. Getting a trade and going solo ATM would be pretty risky as most guys are Feeling the pinch hard and it's going to get a lot worse in canberra over the coming months.

Your best trying to get to uni before fees go through the roof. Everyone has a hecs debt so I wouldn't worry. Plus you don't pay it until your earning a more reasonable income. Cheapest loan you can get....for now. The market is saturated with people seeking work. You need to get the education just to be on par these days. Before a degree was seen as a solid education, now everyone has one so masters is the next step...shudders.

Most of all, it's not what you know it's who you know. So get out and network!
