I would assume it's not really any gear when it happens as you wouldn't be able to do 80 at 2500rpm in first, but never mind.

That's actually all I can assume based on your post.

5 out of 12 of your exhaust manifold studs are broken causing a massive exhaust leak which in turn is giving the O2 sensor a false reading.

May sound stoopid but it's exactly what my R31 Wagon was doing.
