Running a single bosch coil on my FJ20 with a distributor.

Engine is a high end build making good power on 98 RON pump.

Going to swap to E85 soon and more boost. Tuner said to upgrade ignition as well.. If I run an MSD 6A with blaster 2 coil, will this suffice and should I see an improvement just adding it to my current setup?

Thanks in advance,

G

Certainly the msd will give an improvement, but as suggested above ls coils are cheap as and depending on ecu would be my preferred option.

Could probably get 4 ls coils all installed less than the cost of msd

ok great, well as I don't know a great deal about ignition systems, would I need to ask Wolf (Wolf 3D ECU) for a connector to run these coils? If so, I assume this bypasses the single coil I have.

Does that wire directly to the distributor or what? I'm terribly miss informed when it comes to ignition and wiring so apologies for the ignorance.

You would get rid of distributor. (Still has to be there for crank angle sensing, but with no leads or cap required on it.

The 3d will be able to run the coils no worries.

You will need some wiring done though, wolf won't be likely able to supply wiring for you.

You will need to do some research, buy it is the cheaper and better option.

Ok I see, thanks for the info.

Ultimately, I can set up a LS1 coils and stuff around with wiring etc and most likely get away with it cheaper, however, I can get an MSD 6A and coil from the states delivered for around $320 Aus. Which as I understand is a very simple wire in.

Is there any downside of going with an MSD over a set of LS1 coils for example?

Cheers everyone for the help,

G

Looks like the LS2 setup could be the way.. Can anyone tell me if going to LS2 coils as apposed to an MSD system would be an advantage or not?

I'm just looking at the simplicity of setting up the MSD.

Thanks,

G

I have seen plenty of FJ20's and bluebirds built by Gibson back in the day, all are running stock gear as far as I know, and still being tracked on high boost and e85/sunco. Is your tuner sure it won't cut it?

Sorry the pictures don't show much, you may have been able to get some ideas...

Yeah fairly certain my setup isn't far from it's limit.

It makes just on 400hp now on pump fuel, and with the boost up another 5 - 8 psi along with the switch to E85.. I am hoping for a sizable power increase. I would have thought that would push a normal coil setup past it's limit. My tuner certainly thinks so.

I'm doing a fair bit of reading but I can't see as yet much of a defining difference between quad coils or a simple wire in MSD unit.

Has anyone had experience with hitting the limit of an ignition setup perhaps?

Cheers for the input everyone.

whereas the ls coil thing is the trend atm..... the msd6a setup still punches well above it weight over the years , ,as proven on lots and lots of 9/10 sec vls,

do whatever is easiest. I doubt you would blow out spark from either..

the ls coils setup is probally more reliable in the long run though. some people get a long run from the 6a's, some only get yrs

cheers

    • I had never actually looked into it, but aren't onboard compressors a thing in trucks?
    • Read the ECU for fault codes or have someone else do it. A faulty coolant temperature sender is usually listed in ECUs. If the sensor itself is not busted it can also be a bad ground connection. Or in a really unlucky case, damaged wiring.
    • Can't be a Futjitsubo as those are made with a flex piece and Reimax is smaller in pipe diameter. If anything it is closest to a Mines pipe, but evidently it is not an actual Mines pipe.   Classic word humor
    • Alright I will try to not forget.   As GTSboy replied to you already, problem is mainly the mismatch between the actual exhaust part and the denomination in the papers. That basically just looks like tampering to a cop, if they were to check your car and notice. If it had been done right they would have clarified it to be a custom pipe and just given it a certain part number that you have to engrave or weld onto the pipe. I will definitely inquire on what to do. Changing the pipe wouldn't be my favorite solution as it costs a bunch of money and the cat was fitted with the front pipe and exhaust under the car, and if the front pipe flange does not sit in the OEM location the cat will need to be refit for any other pipe to work. It also usually doesn't need a brand name or something like that, but more something like a part number. Usually for exhaust parts, on silencers and cat units specifically, there is a badge that reads the certificate number that belongs to these exhaust parts under EU regulation. You get these numbers after you put a part or group of parts through the tedious testing according to EU vehicle legislation and they pass. You can find these "part numbers" on various parts throughout a EU vehicle. On windows, headlights, engine parts, seat belts and so on. All these parts have gone through standardized testing and acquired a so called ECE or EG Certificate that makes them legal to use by themselves in all countries that adhere to these standards. You can also not alter these parts in any way, if you do they become illegal. An example for stampings on an exterior lighting part, the people who need to know can find the documentation for this unit in a database. I do not know what all the standards and so on mean.
    • If that was the case I suppose you could call it "Mein's" brand....  ... I'll see myself out... 😅
