Technically it still belongs to the last registered owner. The state will issue the last owner with a first and final notice (they will have 4 days to remove the vehicle) IF the vehicle is not removed:

if the Vehicle is less that $1000 in value it is scrapped

if the Vehicle is more than $1000 it is sold and Auction to recover the councils costs.

If you take a car that has been abandoned you can be done for theft. You have no claim to an abandoned car.

Geez, After growing up in Can-berra, the one thing you DO NOT DO is leave your car on the side of a road over night.

1st night: All windows & lights smashed. Wheels removed.

2nd night: Car rolled onto it's side. Engine, gearbox & differential removed.

3rd night: Car rolled onto it's roof. Any last bits pilfered.

4th night: No more car.

A valuable lesson to anyone who breaks down in A.C.T. : STAY WITH YOUR CAR & HAVE IT TOWED IMMEDIATELY!!!!

On the M4 back in the 80s a guy pulled over to fix a flat.

As he was emptying the boot he heard a noise at the front.

Peeking around he noticed the bonnet up and yelled at the head underneath it.

The voice said,"That's OK mate: you can have the wheel. I'm just after the battery."
