Hi all, I am about to change all fluids on my 33 GTR and have spent 2 hrs trying to get definitive info on how to access the filler hole for the transfer case through the gearstick,I need detailed info on how to remove it without damaging anything, sorry it seems there is info on this but I can't find it could sks please tell me how this is done and also how to best remove and replace coolant fluid as well and what coolant most gtr owners are using Thanks in advance,Greypearl

Pouring oil through the shifter will only fill the gearbox. There is a seperate drain and fill plug on the transfer case to change the transfer case oil. You will have do get under the car to do this and have some method of pumping the oil in to the transfer case.

Tim is wrong. On a GTR (or I guess any awd RB) you can fill the transfer case via the shifter hole but you should probably locate and remove the filler plug on the side of the transfer case as well so that you can tell when it is full.

On a GTR the rear extension housing and transfer case are sealed separately from the gearbox.

Main box uses gear oil, transfer case uses ATF.

So although you could fill the transfer case via the gearstick (which is mounted on the extension housing), you still need to remove the level plug to fill to the correct level.

NEVER drop the oil until you've checked that the level plug can actually be removed.

Often times a careless previous owner has ruined any chance of removing them.

To me, pumping the oil in via the level plug is far easier than removing the gearstick trim, gearstick and so on.

See what I mean info that's reliable is hard to find on this topic,so from what's been said so far I assume that there is a fill and drain plug on the outside of the transfer case but it's difficult to get the oil in so people choose to take the gearstick out to fill it and use the filler hole on the side of the case to know when it's full, so you still have to get both plugs undone on the outside so maybe save the hassle of pulling out the gearstick and use a sludge pump to fill from the outside of the case, but that said I still would like to know how to take the gearstick out properly and find the filler hole, Cheers Greypearl.

Thanks mate,So it all hinges on whether you can undo the plugs first and have a suitable pump, last time I did it I did it all from the outside with a sludge pump, new one of course and it was quite laborious then I read about filling the transfer case through the gearstick and thought maybe I missed the transfer case oil change last time and was a bit worried but now I'm more worried that I put the wrong oil in the transfer case as I don't remember buying any ATF fluid yikes may have put smurfs blood in there cause I tried that in the gearbox found it didn't let the synchros work properly as it was too slippery and also since then had the gearbox rebuilt by Award gearboxes in Sydney to upgrade to Series 3 specs and am now going to use Redline MT90 for it's first change since rebuild,I am not sure whether the Transfer case is part of the gearbox so don't know if it got recoed or not as to whether the right oil ended up in there so all will be revealed in 2 weeks will post up my discovery here when I know thanks for your help, but no-one answered the question about how to remove the Gearstick properly or which coolant to use and how to best drain and refill it,Cheers Greypearl.

Transfer is separate to gearbox so that wouldn't have been recoed unless specified. As you've worked out, just drain and fill through the external plugs. But if you need to take out gearstick.

Take off gear knob, pull out ashtray, could be a screw or 2 behind there, now you remove plastic surround, remove boot, now you should see a couple of big circlips holding the stick in the top of the box, pry out the big one on top. Now stick should just slid out.

The right stuff to use in the transfer is Nissan Matic-D. It's about $70 for 5L from Nissan. So you'll get a couple of changes out of it.

Thanks Tricstar at least I know how to remove the stick now thanks to you,,could you tell me the best coolant to use concentrate or premixed,I'm leaning towards Nulon green 5yr stuff what is everyone using?? Cheers Greypearl

    • Hey guys. I have a 400R on its way to Australia from Japan currently and have a few questions I’m hoping others may be able to help with.   Wondering if anyone here has had any luck getting the Sat nav unit to work in Australia!? Assuming the Stereo is as simple as a band expanded and tv won’t work?  Seeing as they’re based off a Q50 which is Aus delivered is there any way to link that system to the nav? Nav modules and head unit are different part numbers and appear slightly different at the rear with plug ins etc. can I put my xtrail sd card into the rv37 and will that convert the maps or update to Australian? Has anyone got any advice here?     also has anyone fitted the factory remote start and Security system once it’s landed in Australia? I put an enquirey to Nissan Japan in via a third party, and they suggested it needs a Nissan Japan dealers device to setup and couldn’t guarantee if one here could do it or not. They can supply and I can physically fit it but to setup I would need a dealers device. Any information here would be appreciated also. I’ve seen one here with it fitted already prior to leaving Japan at a dealer/inporter, so clearly passes compliance and works when fitted Japan and doesn’t need changing here.      also, does the tyre inflation sensors work here? Does anything change with them when the vehicle arrives? Where are they actually situated? I’ve read they have batteries and they need to changing at times and seems like resetting involves the nav system?    any help here would be appreciated and any other aust specific information to help would be great. Looking forward to see what the current generation skyline is like and eager to see how many of the gadgets can be utilised here.  Thanks in advance
    • Do need to take it with a pinch of salt. One of the adapter failures, they clearly had setup issues with the flywheel.  One of the slipping ones I spoke to and it was pretty clear the throwout was riding, rather than fix, just swapped to a new clutch.    These clutches are being put in anything from 5k offroad 4x4 beaters, GR yaris, 500hp commodores to 1200hp barra monsters. Bound to be some issues in some of them when they are not a simple bolt in affair due to the changes in height.    There is a lot going on in this picture and unless I did the job myself no way to tell what really happened.
    • I did this mod in 2019  You just have to modify the top bracket of the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU so it sits more upright and closer to the back seat and run a good quality positive battery lead from the engine bay, the negative lead i just bolted down to the body in the boot.
    • Damn... Not the feedback I want to hear.
