Hi Guys, im a newbie to the forum and im just after a little guidance.

Ive spent a fair bit of time reading and searching but im just not finding the information i think i need,

I have a 1996 s2 gtst, it was stock other then a cheap power spirit turbo, fmic and PowerFC. These were both on it when i bought it. The turbo seems to have the original turbine section but with a new larger compressor housing, there is no compressor play or damage to the fins so i thought id leave it on until it needs to be replaced.

I took it to a mates workshop to dyno tune it a few weeks ago but after 6000rpm car started to run lean as it could not provide the fuel required. The car has a supposed 225k on it so i thought if they were genuine ks the fuel pump may be tired

So this long weekend i decided to work on it, I installed a new fuel pump GSS342 and new Nismo 555 injectors as well as a z32 afm,

Im getting the car tuned tomorrow but i just want the car to be driveable 25km to the dyno

I went in to settings 5 on fc edit and changed all 6 injectors to 66.0 which i think means 66%. Please correct me of im wrong,

Car started fine but had a rough idle, i gently revved it to 2000rpm and the entire garage was full of grey smoke.

I didnt adjust the latency as ive read it should be fine if i leave it, but after the amount of thick smoke that poured out i though id try changing it. I was not to sure where to change the latency.

I found in section 5 the box with ign lag ms vs batv, i read somewhere that the stock latency was .70 and the new latency should .18 or .19 but i was unsure what to do.

The 12v figure was 0.700 so i changed this to 0.180 and left all other values as they were, thinking that once the car was being driven and charging voltage was 13.5v it may be ok,

I started the car and it roared in to life, the rough idle was gone and the smoke had stopped,

The car was high idling about 2000rpm as it was stone cold but all else seemed ok,

I let the car get up to temperature and bled the coolant and took it for a slow run around the block keeping off boost. Other then taking a few moments to drop thet idle back down when stopping

( would sit at 1500rpm for 2 sec before dropping to 900rpm ) all seemed to be fine.

The only issue is a strange smell coming from the car, like bp100 at race track, its not a coolant smell, a fuel fume smell, not even a leaking oil smell. Im a bit puzzled.

Worried it may be a little lean now i removed cylinder 1 and 2 plugs for an inspection, both plugs were dry and heavily sooted up around the bottom of the thread but the ground tab at the very top of the plug was a very pale grey, not bright white but far from black

Should my car be safe to drive to the tuners 25ks?

Have i done something wrong???

Please don’t shoot me down im new to this and learning as i go,

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers Pete

If it's driving ok, and there are no pops, stutters or pinging you should be fine to slowly drive it (off boost) that far. You generally know when a car is running too lean or rich because it runs like crap.

Make sure you take a new set of plugs with you, they may be trashed by the time you get there.

With that amount of extra fuel, you could have probably just filled the tank with e85 and driven there without modifying the map at all. ;)

Thanks Scotty,

Ive got spare plugs and tools to change them when i get there, just dont know what to use, Im chasing 280 to 300 rwhp

i currently am running BCPR 7ES but i also have BCPR 6ES and BCPR7EY-11. Im only running stock coils and am hoping to run 14-16psi boost after the tune but im not sure if the 1.1mm gap will be to much

The column right next to where you entered the 66% is where you have to enter the new latency values you have worked out. ie. New latency - Old latency = value to enter. I believe the rb25 inj are 370cc and 0.528ms

Set back the inj lag vs batt to the default values and also dont forget to select z32(vg30) in the aif flow options on tab 3

    • Really, anyone modifying a car isn't being financially smart. We're doing it for the things we love. And honestly, a high revving, light, NA car is actually pretty darn fun. I used to have a Swift Sport, and I miss that thing as a daily, and yes, doing something like some intake and exhaust stuff would have made minimal gains, but would have bought an even bigger smile

    • Yeah, playing with naturally aspirated is not smart bang for your buck power wise, but then I've never been known for being smart when it comes to cars and modifications
    • I mean from V8 world there are gains to be made in intakes and such over stock items, but definitely only if you tune them. We're talking about I dunno, 10kw here and there on a 300KW v8, gains made by tuning in the 0.2 AFR that it changes so YES but also no you won't notice it other than the sound. Duct the air as mentioned 750,000 times and you will notice happier IAT's which definitely make a difference N/A. I mean my unsubstantiated guess is you'd go from 140kw with everything stock (after cams) to 145kw with everything and a tune :p
    • I decided to "spend baby spend", and "risk it for the biscuit" 2 Orders were made buying parts that I "don't really need but really really want" totalling $2.5k AUD 1: In stock items (intake plenum and throttle body) 2: The airbox thingie, with no real ETA for them getting more stock, so patience will be required
