Guys,

Recently flushed the oil and replaced it with this and ever since the engine sound and whilst driving the car, it doesn't seem to be running at optimum performance. It is very strange. Best way I can describe is as though the performance of the car after the oil change is performing like a car that is due for an oil change... .

Anyone able to offer feedback on this ? Am I using the wrong oil ?

Car has got 78kms on the odometer

I use Penrite HPR5 5W40 in mine but it's a VQ37VHR motor. At any rate, I've always used either Penrite or Amsoil depending on the required viscosity on all my vehicles. Never had an issue.

I literally changed my Nulon 10W40 to Nulon 5W30 when I serviced my 35 today. Haven't driven it properly yet, but can report back tomorrow night after I have done some km in it tomorrow if you want.

Oil viscosity is critical to camshaft actuation, and changing the grade will mean the ecu needs to re-learn the camshaft PWM input figure for a particular advance target. This should happen eventually over time, or it may need to be done via the Nissan consult software. Probably easier for you to dump the 5w30 and put some 10w40 in there, it should feel a lot better.

You may have also dislodged some burnt oil varnish with the flush, which has partially blocked the little filter in the actuator solenoid.

In a nutshell, run a 5w40/10w40 and stick to it, and change your oil every 5k.

Bloody shitty nissans...I change the oil in my Honda every 10k with factory spec 5-30...i even changed it to 10-40 and 10-30 once......vtec still worked fine yo!!

Isn't VTEC just 2 fixed cam settings and it switches between them? if so, it is a bit different to variable valve timing on the VQ.

anyway, I have run castrol edge 5W-30 in mine since I have owned it, without any issues.

Just changed the oil in my PNM35 (also on 78,000km) to Penrite HPR10, which is now rated at 10W50. Not ideal but I'll see how it goes, it's generally just puttering around town at the moment on shorter trips.

it does use oil pressure to switch between setting i think though....or something like that :wacko:

Heh, I just changed to a 5W30 (Castrol Edge Titanium, was on special at Supercheap) and haven't noticed any difference, although I should really check the oil level to see if it's using any up.

PS: The VQ35 dipstick still sh!ts me to tears, so damn hard to get out without scraping all the oil off in the first place, and then nigh-on impossible to get back in again. I swear the dispstick is the best (and only good) thing about my POS Commodore.

So why check it? Just dump the 5L in and be happy for 5K.

Funnily enough that's exactly the tactic to which I've resorted. Oil change every 3 months means there should be something left in it, and I got the same amount out as I put in last time I changed it (start of this month) so it seems healthy enough.

    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c

    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
