Replaced all 4 factory 6x8 speakers in the missus Madzda6 (Non-Bose) with these (Which I see have also dropped in price... bastards).

They are quieter than the old ones for a given number on the volume (though clearer as there was a damaged speaker previously).

A few things come to mind.

Is it because the factory head unit does not have enough juice to drive them properly?

Have I possibly wired them incorrectly?

In the rears both wires on the loom leading into the speaker were carrying 5+ volts. So I was unsure which way to hook them up but everything seemed to "work" when I connected them. Does it matter?

In the front, there's separate tweeters so there's 4 wires on the loom, only 2 had voltage, the other 2 had the same colour as the tweeters, I joined one voltage and one tweeter together per input to the speaker. Again everything "worked" and the tweeter worked as normal.

They just don't seem to have much punch and require higher numbers on the volume to match the old speakers for decibels.

When test front, back, left and right individually, they all sound the same to me volume/clarity/base wise etc.

I had the same issue with my XR6 Turbo when I swapped the speakers out. Similar to the ones you used.

I'm guessing it's because the factory speakers don't need as much power but even when I installed an aftermarket headunit they didn't produce as much bass as the factory speakers.

They were a lot clearer though and handles much more power.

An amp should make a pretty big difference to them.

Yeah consensus is an amp will solve it, but that also means two LOCs, I'm talking with a local car audio installer who works at one of the places in town and comes highly recommended, very helpful and basically telling me everything I need to know - even install which is how he makes his money.

I may just source a cheap amp and have him install it.

May be silly but... Are you Sure you have them wired correctly?

If you have the wires around the wrong way on one side, they will be out of phase and some frequencies will get cancelled out.

Just a thought.

The original speakers didn't have +/- markings? Often they'll be printed/stamped near the terminals and can be nearly impossible to see without good light and viewing angle.

Also you can test the ohms of the factory speakers with a multi meter if they're not marked.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
