Gates Timing Belts

Hey all,

Im changing the timing belt on my rb25.

whats the best one to go for ? OEM? Gates? etc

Oem is best.

Gates racing can be noisy.

It seems like you start at least a thread a day lately......

noisey isnt a huge problem for me if its better lasting and what not over oem as its for a track car

If its set up right the gates belt isnt noisey. I have one and its fine. I had a Dayco belt on my old engine which was good as well

Nothing wrong with Stock or the 2 i have listed

I'm running a gates one on my R.

It was pretty noisy initially however i found that i had over tensioned it (very slightly). Was fine when cold but when at operating temp it would make a distinctive whine.

Loosened it off a tad and its been fine since.

OEM belt, looks good and isn't noisy.

Money can be spent elsewhere.. there are guys making 300/400kW with an OEM belt.

Had one on my daily drive, after adjusting it a couple times, I ditched it for a Nissan belt

Ive heard the Gates racing ones are prone to amplify the timing scatter issues, something to do with the meshing into the wheels which may be explained by the noise produced.

Nismo belt. That can be noisy for the 1st 1000km but nowhere as noisy as Gates

I found a Gates belt can run as silently as a stocker, it's all to do with belt tension.

Unless you're fitting belts everyday, you lose the "touch" and kevlar belts require slightly less tension than factory.

So the average handy-bloke ends up doing the job twice, or perhaps get the job done poorly by an expert and believe their spin that the noise will go away in time.

Nobody likes pulling it all down (especially an Rb26) just to slacken off a tad, which is why no more kevlar belts for me.

Who else remembers Rob (RIPS) offering his car if anyone could find a non-factory Nissan engine part on his early R32/Rb30?
