Hi All

I have a an GTR and Silvia that are in need of some compliance. My mechanic has been chasing up what the requirements are from various engineers (some say that even tyres need to be changed to DOT marked, others say new seat belts...which wasnt what I thought the 15 YO scheme was about) but he has gone on holidays so I am left to sort out what can be done.

Anyway I was hoping we could get some ideas of the what is actually required to be changed and whats engineers you use in Victoria and other states.

J-Spec quoted $1400 per car which is ok I suppose (flat rate for all 15ers), but seeing as the whole deal with the 15 YO rule is that anyone can do the compliance and then just take it for sign off by an engineer, I was hoping to just do all the work myself and then get it signed off. If the savings arent substantial then I suppose they will be off to UPI or J-Spec.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Seat belts, mirrors, Intrusion bars, sunvisors, child restraints

helps to have DOT approved tyres on when you go through the roadworthy too

btw why have you started an import business if you don't even know the basic requirements to register a 15 year import?

you can do the work yourself and deliver the car to an engineer, but some of the items are not that simple, belts are not required if there in good nick, but must be retractable in the rear, which silvia usually doesnt have, tyres are ok if they are roadworthy.

but intrusion bars are a pain, if u attempt them, make sure you speak to your engineer as they all have different requirements for dimensions and the way they are fixed, fuel filler restrictor is also a pain if you dont have the correct tool, r32 filler necks are a pain.

we charge $1300 for r32 and $1500 for silvia(silvia requires rear belts)

I did mine.

Piece of piss if you get the intrusion bars done properly and the fuel restrictor done.

Someone had attempted to do the bars in my car without talking to an engineer so I had to cut bits out INSIDE the doors to prevent them rubbing and knocking on the glass, then get the engineer to weld around the cuts. Was a pain in the arse but not overly difficult because I had access to small dental drills which cut steel easily with the right disc and can get in to very tight spots... But you'd want to get it right first time because you wont have the luxury of being able to cut bits out once theyre welded into the doors.

The rest of it is easy, just time consuming, you need to make it all look neat and tidy and like any work that was done was done properly. I got my car through Regency first try (bar the steering wheel because they wouldnt accept the Isotta as the paperwork allowing Isottas wasnt due for another couple of weeks, but they let me drive to a wreckers and buy another standard wheel and come straight back)

    • Thanks for your insight, it being basically useless will impact my decision for sure. I thought it may help the engine breath better I guess. But then again, I have also been told that tuning an RB20DE is also not worth it. Exactly, we follow EU Regulations. There is a bit more leeway on older vehicles. My Porsche 924 came without a cat from factory and managed to pass, they still mentioned that I have quite high emissions on it though.
    • My apologies, I stand corrected. Thanks for registering to mention this! And thank you for actually reaching out to the council to clarify. This is the sensible thing to do and the opposite of what I was alluding you were doing. I may have seen too much outrage and hate being fueled on the internet and it has made me a somewhat cynical old man. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are real people behind websites and accounts. In my defence, CarExpert and CarExplore do read quite similarly at a glance. I shall try and do better in the future. (Please stick around to get the latest scoops on dealing with old Nissan shitboxes )
    • Don't bother. The poor little RB20 doesn't make enough gas flow to challenge the flow capabilities of even the littlest cat, and you won't make any extra power, and all you'll do it soot up your rear bumper. Plus....is Malta not runing under Euro regs?
    • Hey Daniel, sorry to hear that and thanks for posting up for us at a really hard time I only knew SmoothLine through the forums, we never met as we are based in different states, but when he was most active on here he was quite a while back so not many of the current crowd might remember him. I am pretty sure he was active in the Queensland SQU club but that is defunct now too (times are changing and we are all getting older). Farewell SmoothLine!
    • Turns out depending on whether the car was equipped with TCS or not there are different signals coming to the dash, meaning there are different speedo clusters.  Wired in a speedo calibrator box from aliexpress and now works fine.
